oooouff ,

Why is it just an Image file?

All I want is a sweet listen to these bangers, and all I get is a redirect to an image. I like the image, but I like podcasts more. What am I doing wrong?

Iliad and Odyssey ,

The Trojan War and the Odyssey

My first contact with Homer and his Odyssey was when I was six years old. Our neighbour, the professor of the Classics Department at the UofT thought it would be an excellent bedtime story for six and seven year olds.

Jeffrey Wright's podcasts The TrojanWar and The Odyssey are superb. His enthusiasm for his subjects and the effort he has put into researching the two stories he tells is very apparent.

The Iliad and The Odyssey are epic poems whch were iinitailly intended to be recited. Although Mr. Wright's script is written in pros rather than verse, telling us the stories of the Greek and Trojan heroes is in keeping with the Homeric tradition of verbal story telling. Mr. Wright has the vocal skills to tell us a thumping good story.

The podcasts are more than a translation of the Iliad and Odyssey. Adding the stories of the events preceding the Trojan war, discussions about the historical context of events and social standards of the day, as they pertain to events in these stories, and intorducing both the Greek and Trojan heroes, and the minor participants in some detail, all contribute to the listener's ability to experience a three dimensional view of the events in the Trojan war and Odysseus' struggles to return home.

The discussions that follow each episode of The Trojan War and the Odyssey clarify events desscribed in the episodes or challenge us to think about what we are hearing.

m0lly milli0ns ,

the Bronze Age, eh!?

thank you Jeff for guiding me through The Iliad and then some. engaging storytelling, extremely valuable commentary, all delivered in a thick Ontario accent that I started off hating but ended up very fond of (I also live in Ontario so).
