This show aims to pull back the curtain on the music industry, and give up-and-coming artists some of the knowledge that veterans wish they'd had when they were just starting out. Our format on The Vocal Lab incorporates some solo episodes where it's just Sara, talking about voice care and singing and performance coaching, the realities of life on the road, and how to prep for the studio - basically answering questions you may or may not even know to ask!We will also have TONS of guest interview episodes, where veterans can draw on their experience to lay out the yellow brick road for the next generation of artists.     Lesley Mitchell-Clarke is a Toronto-based jazz publicist, media consultant, and arts journalist with a long-standing career in music and entertainment. A former child actress from a showbiz family, she has worked in TV production, toured as a performer, and led PR campaigns for artists like Joshua Redman, Blossom Dearie, and Janis Siegel, as well as labels including Warner Bros. Jazz and Concord. She has represented The Village Vanguard, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and other major events, while contributing writing to Hot House, The Whole Note, and more. Lesley continues to work internationally and is married to acclaimed jazz drummer Terry Clarke. During our chat, we talk about the keys to learning to promote yourself as an up and coming musician, the law of attraction's effect on opportunities, and removing nostalgia about the old ways to focus on the modern Music industry.     Sarah Whitten, is an internationally known movement specialist for singers. Using principles of biomechanics, biotensegrity, and pain science, she works with singers' bodies to resolve pain and physical dysfunction to improve the singing voice. She holds an MA in Pedagogy, and an MM in Performance both from The Ohio State University.   Additionally she is a 500-hour certified Yoga Instructor, and holds certifications in Movement for Trauma, Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy, Yoga Therapy, and Restore Your Core Method.     Bill Sample is an award-winning composer, producer, arranger, and pianist, widely regarded as one of Vancouver's top "first call" musicians. With a career spanning decades, he has worked with legends like Ray Charles, Mel Tormé, Robben Ford, and served as Music Director for David Foster, performing alongside Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, and Peter Cetera. Bill has produced for artists including Leon and Eric Bibb, Jane Mortifee, and Marcus Mosely, and contributed to the Grammy-winning Ratatouille soundtrack. A graduate of the University of Victoria in Music Composition, he was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2003 and has received both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and an Ovation Award. In recent years, Bill has focused on original music projects, including his jazz trio album Small, solo piano release We Three Kings, and multiple albums with Darlene Cooper under their duo Wild Blue Herons, with a third release on the way. Mindy is a Vocal coach who was a vocal performance major at the University of Utah, but her education didn't stop there. Throughout her career, Mindy has studied vocal technique, voice science, and vocal health with nationally and internationally renowned vocal instructors, educational institutions, and accredited programs throughout the world. Mindy's philosophy is "the minute I stop learning is the minute I stop teaching." Mindy is an expert in complex ins and outs of voice science. She has a thorough understanding not only of producing the best sound, but also of keeping the vocal tract in optimal health. In addition to being a vocal coach and Clinical Vocologist, Mindy is a licensed and certified massage therapist who specializes in structural integrations for voice performers. Not only does she focus on the technical sound of the voice but also the full body approach, patterns and stamina that may affect the ability to perform.     Ep 88 - Mastering the Art of Music: A Deep Dive with Legendary Jazz Drummer Terry Clarke

    Welcome back to The Vocal Lab Podcast! In this episode, I sit down with the incredibly talented Terry Clarke. In 1970 Terry settled in Toronto, at first working with Lenny Breau, and quickly became the city's leading studio drummer, noted for his versatility in jazz and rock settings. Concurrently, he played jazz in local clubs and concerts, and on radio and TV. Terry then moved to New York, working there and/or touring with Hall, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, Roger Kellaway, Helen Merrill, Toots Thielemans, Oscar Peterson, and others. Terry returned to Canada in 1999 and joined The Rob McConnell Tentet. The group was nominated for a Juno award for their debut CD, The Rob McConnell Tentet (Justin Time). Terry's own debut album, It's About Time (2009, Blue Music Group), was recorded during live performances in Toronto and Montreal and featured several jazz musicians including guitarist Jim Hall, saxophonist Joe Lovano, alto saxophonist Greg Osby, and, from the Terry Clarke Trio, Phil Dwyer on saxophones and Don Thompson on bass. The album won a Juno for traditional jazz album of the year (2010). In addition to teaching jazz clinics and seminars throughout North America and overseas, Terry has taught as an adjunct professor of jazz in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. In 2002, Terry was invested as a member of the Order of Canada. He has also been honoured as Drummer of the Year at the Canadian National Jazz Awards (2002, 2004-2008). In our conversation, Terry talks about walking the line between learning the craft of music and the ability to play for a specific moment, the importance of learning from role models while also being yourself, and how to best utilize jobs for your own artistic development.
