    John's Intro:

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

    Amber's Rant:

This is Episode #31 for 2022!

Getting close to Episode 33! Hopefully everyone out there has had an opportunity to get the sunshine, because winter is on it's way! I can see a preview of it today where I am – clouds, chill winds…

Don't forget to take some time off of the devices! Devices are great distraction noodles, but they can melt your brain too. Taking breaks is always a good thing – remember, too much of anything is no good for you!

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

    News this week:

    – (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-august-17-2022/) WordPress Vulnerability Report – Apologies, I realize I completely forgot to bring this last week! I've added last week's link into the show notes for you to make up for it. (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-august-10-2022/)

There is only one plugin listed with severe vulnerability linking it to WordPress Core Vulnerability – Simple Single Sign On. Please be sure to look over the information in this link, it is always good to know what's going on.

    – (https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/new-mailchimp-breach-exposed-digitalocean-customer-email-addresses/) – New MailChimp breach exposed DititalOcean customer email addresses – a lot of people use MailChimp I have noticed. This is a good thing to know – the security breach exposed the email addresses of some customers, with a small number receiving unauthorized password resets. First learned on August 8th, it has been dealt with; though may still want to double check, make sure your sites are updated, and maybe change passwords if you are a user of DigitalOcean.

    – (https://wptavern.com/newsletter-glue-closes-free-plugin-on-wordpress-org) Newsletter Glue closes free Plugin on WordPress.org – Newsletter Glue Creators have removed their free plugin from WordPress.org in favour of focusing on the commercial version. There was a warning to users 5 months ago that they would be closing the free version and no longer updating as of May 1st, however the process was delayed until August 15th. The reason for this delay was that they had set the plugin so that when one upgraded, the free version automatically uninstalled and the paid version installed and activated. This caused some issues that took some work.

    Amber's Rant:

This is #30 of 50 episodes for 2022!

Ever wonder why we wind up keeping those irritating habits like pulling all nighters on the one night a week you really shouldn't be doing that? I have too… no answers as of yet though. The only thing I have really learned regarding that is it takes 30 days to create a habit, and 3 days to break it.

Hopefully everyone has had an opportunity to get outside and get some toasty sunshine on them this summer! After all, we are drawing near the end of the summer – and for those who are going to be looking for the shooting stars this week, be aware that the full moon is a Super Moon this year, and so the shooting stars will not be quite as visible! Cool we have a Super Moon, last one of the year, though also kinda sucks the timing.

If you are going camping to check out the shooting stars and the full moon, make sure you turn your phone off and ignore the socials for a few days. Take the opportunity to disconnect from that, and reconnect with your humans near you!

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins

    News this week:

Just a quick observation: WordPress.org was down for hours this last week, and it is nearly impossible to find any information on that. Nobody seems to be talking about it, although when Amazon or FaceBook goes down for a single hour everyone talks about it. I find that interesting.

(https://wptavern.com/serverpress-is-shutting-down) ServerPress is shutting down – ServerPress is the maker of DesktopServer, a WordPress local development tool; they are announcing their shut down after 12 years of business due to the rapid changes in the world of WordPress. In their farewell letter to their customers they stated that having been so focused on building out their v5.0, they lost site of the changes in the WordPress world, and realized too late that they will not be able to afford the overhead costs associated with continuing the country. When asked about possibly making DesktopServer available as open source code, the response was vague only stating that they cannot say at this time – though it may be something that will be considered down the road.

They have stated that they will continue to support their Premium Subscribers until their subscription is up, which for some may mean migrating to another local development tool.

For those who use ServerPress, be aware that they are shutting down if you did not receive the letter and think about your own next steps on ...

    Amber's Rant:

This is show #29 for 2022!

Hey everyone! Glad to be back for the show this week! It's a little shorter this week because life is making demands once again, though I made sure to really beef up the Extra News section for you!

I hope everyone is dealing alright with the heat out there – here on the island we are dealing with a heat wave. It's crazy temperatures right now – 10 degrees above our average! Though it was like this last year too; the weatherman said it would only be for this one week – though he said that last year too and it stuck around for a month.

    Fingers Crossed!

Remember to drink lots of water, and take the cooler times of day to go be silly and have some fun!

    > WordPress Vlnerability Report – July 27, 2022 (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-july-27-2022/) – If anybody has not updated to WordPress Core 6.1, might want to think about doing so now. 6.0 had vulnerabilities that 6.1 fixed.

For the plugins vulnerabilities, we have a smaller list today: WP-DBManager, SearchWP LIve Ajaz Search, Simple Banner, WP-UserOnline, Flipbox, and Digital publications by Supsystic.

Plugins with No Known Fix list is long, here are the ones I recognize: Testimonials, Easy Student Results, VR Calendar, Duplicate Page and Post Plugin.

    > Automattic is removing WordPress.com features from the official WordPress mobile apps (https://wptavern.com/automattic-is-removing-wordpress-com-features-from-the-official-wordpress-mobile-apps) – WordPress mobile team has announced that it will be pulling all Jetpack and WordPress.com from the official WordPress mobile apps. This will be done in a gradual process, concluding at the end of 2022. The reason for this move is ‘for the sake of clarity and closer-to-core experience, the mobile team will be working to refocus the app on staple features you'd find with a fresh download of WordPress'.

They have listed out the features being moved in a list for you to look at, at the link given here in the show notes.

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the trees are getting extra friendly with my face – allergies suck! Although luckily there's a lot you can do for your allergies, so that's a bonus. Still sucks though.

Hoping everyone is getting outside and getting that beautiful sunshine while it's here! It was late getting to us this year, so be sure to get out for extra hours this summer to make up for the lack!

    News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – July 13, 2022 (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-july-13-2022/) – We have a list of plugins to pay attention to this week, some of the ones I recognize are: Shortcode For Current Date, Copyright Proof, WordPress Popup, and Project Source Code Download. There are quite a few more, so be sure to check them out!

WordPress Themes Team contributors get pushback on proposal to improve Block Themes' Visibility in the Directory (https://wptavern.com/wordpress-themes-team-contributors-get-pushback-on-proposal-to-improve-block-themes-visibility-in-the-directory) – This is one of the ideas that the team put forth 7 weeks ago: possibility of changing the popular themes algorithm to more prominently feature block themes, and/or adding a new ‘Block' menu item next to Popular and Latest on the themes directory team.

The 94 available block themes represent fewer than 1% of the directory's 9,761 themes.

A good point made by one of the contributors is that to add a ‘Block' tab to Theme Directory filter will bring up the full-site-editing tag Themes as well, causing more confusion than it would be helping.

This is an ongoing issue that the WordPress Community is rather inflamed about.

WordPress Executive Director says 5% in Five for the Future Program is aspirational and Not Required (https://wptavern.com/wordpress-executive-director-says-5-in-five-for-the-future-program-is-aspirational-and-not-required) – The director was responding to a public criticism where the ‘Five for the Future's True Intentions' was called ‘toxic score keeping'. No, this is not required, though everyone who does put in get's a point, and those points are being shoved under others' noses. This is an interesting conversation to follow.

They also laid off 100 of its 700 employees. They have given just under two months notice, even though it was suggested that six months be given. This seems like it might go rather poorly.

    News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – June 22, 2022 – There is a decent sized list today for the plugins to worry about – though be sure to check the ‘fixed plugins' too. I noticed that Gravity PDF is on the ‘fixed' list this week.

Some I recognize on the worrisome plugins this week: Pricing Deals for WooCommerce, Comment License, Custom Popup Builder, Rename wp-login.php, WordPress Team Manager – this is just a few, be sure to have a look at the list this week for both your site and your clients sites.

WordPress.org forces security update for critical Ninja Forms Vulnerability – Last week Ninja Form users got a forced update for a PHP object injection vulnerability – this made it possible to be remotely exploited without anyone needing authentication of any kind. Oddly enough, Ninja Forms did not post about his update on its blog or social media accounts or anything…

If you use Ninja Forms and do not allow auto updates, be sure to head into yours and your clients sites to update in short order.

WordPress.org strongly urges Theme Authors to switch to locally hosted webfonts – The reason for this is because of the recent German court case, which fined a website owner for biolating the GDPR by using Google-Hosted webfonts. The Themes Team is also considering banning remotely hosted web fonts moving forward, though this is still being discussed. Core contributors are now working on updating all the default themes from Twenty Twelbe through Twenty Seventeen to use locally hosted webfonts. This could affect your sites if you use Google WebFonts, so be aware of this.

Great information on plugins

I don't find all the plugins applicable (not using WooCommerce), but generally in a month there will be 1 to 3 great plugins that I will explore to see if they will fit into my sites ... also the discussion of various plugins plants seeds in my mind of what could be used in websites.

I just wanted to mention about your last contest and why I didn't enter ... I live on Bowen Island just off the coast of West Vancouver and while the plugin sounded great the maps were for the USA ... don't live there ... not sure I want to visit there anymore. I would have entered if there was an option to get the map for Canada or even BC instead of the USA.

Would love to contribute to your podcast, but currently all but one of the websites I manage are for non profits and I work on them for free ... hopefully in the future I will get some paying clients that will allow me to expand. So unfortunately all you can get from me is an iTunes review ... 5 dragons!

Keep up the great work ... love the new format and sounds.

Shadow-Allan ,

Glad I found you!!

I can't tell you the time I search through the Wordpress repository looking for plugins.
I just found you guys a few days ago and after listening to a handfull of episodes I'm hooked.
Keep up the excellent work!!!

A must listen for Wordpress users.

@pegattricks ,

Love this podcast

This is one of four podcasts I listen to every week. I am fairly new to WP-this podcast is pretty jargon free so I can understand it. It's given me lots of ideas for extending my site and has confirmed some of the plugins I like too. I agree with one of your reviewers who said it solved problems he didn't know he had.

I like the way you give back by featuring longer interviews with other developers and featuring pros who provide good service on your job board.

BTW, the sound quality is excellent! Thanks, guys.
