Joey King Talks 'Practical Magic 2,' Becoming Gypsy Rose, 'Ramona and Beezus' and 'The Conjuring'

The inimitable Joey King joins us on the couch to talk about joining Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in ‘Practical Magic 2.’ At just 27, Joey has already been acting for more than two decades, starting out in commercials at four before landing her breakout role opposite Selena Gomez in ‘Ramona and Beezus’ (which we chat about of course). In this wide-ranging convo she reflects on growing up on-screen, auditioning as the real work, and why acting is, inherently, a little embarrassing. Joey also gets into her longtime ‘Practical Magic’ fandom, working with Nicole and Sandy, the sisterhood at the heart of the movie, casting spells on set and midnight margaritas with her legendary co-stars. Plus, she talks texting with Nicole for life advice (as well as interrupting Nic and Zac Efron’s onscreen tryst in ‘A Family Affair,’ while almost choking on a grape), shaving her head and growing it back (and shaving it again and again), working with Christopher Nolan, learning from Patricia Arquette, her marriage to director Steven Piet, her bestie Sabrina Carpenter, being haunted on the set of ‘The Conjuring,’ and her ICONIC, shoulda-been-award-winning role as Gypsy Rose Blanchard — plus so much more! Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills: The Movies That Don't Exist

A nervous woman glances over her shoulder. A lonely figure stares through a window. A young ingénue arrives in the city with a suitcase—and somehow, you already think you know what happens next. Between 1977 and 1980, Cindy Sherman created 69 black-and-white photographs inspired by the visual language of classic cinema. But these aren’t stills from real movies, and Sherman isn’t playing actual characters. She gives us costumes, poses, and familiar stereotypes—then lets our own cultural programming write the plots. In this episode of Art Happens: The Divine Mess of Art History, James explores how Untitled Film Stills turns the camera on Hollywood’s portrayals of women, the male gaze, and the audience itself. Sherman serves as photographer, director, stylist, performer, and subject—appearing in every image while somehow disappearing behind every role. Long before Instagram taught us to pose, crop, filter, and manufacture our identities, Sherman understood that photographs don’t simply show us who people are. They can teach us who we expect them to be. Cindy Sherman didn’t make the movies. She proved we’d already seen them. Send us a Note! Let us know what you think! How to make big, life changing decisions that will decide your future with Jemma Sbeg | Future Self Series Ep.2

Welcome back to episode 2 of the Future Self series! Missed episode 1? Go back and start there (that's where we break down what this whole series is about) Today we're zooming in on the decades that, looking at our data, most of you are in right now: your twenties and thirties. I think your twenties are the most formative decade of your life, and the choices you make now compound harder than they ever will again. So this episode is all about how to learn to take risks without sabotaging your future. I'm handing the mic to Jemma Sbeg, creator of The Psychology of Your 20s, one of the biggest psychology podcasts in the world. She brings the same research-obsessed energy she's known for (some of her episodes take 10+ hours to write), so you're in great hands. Jemma's also put together a follow-up exercise and her personal recommendations in this week's Working Hard newsletter, so you can actually do something with what you hear today. + JEMMA SBEG Listen to The Psychology of Your 20s: https://www.psychologyofyour20s.com/ Follow TPOY20s: https://www.instagram.com/thatpsychologypodcast/?hl=en + SIGN UP TO THE WORKING HARD NEWSLETTER FOR JEMMA'S RECOMMENDATIONS: https://www.workinghard.co.uk/welcome + FOLLOW THE PODCAST Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workinghardpod/?hl=en TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@workinghardpodcast + DILEMMA SUBMISSION If you'd like to submit any dilemmas to the podcast to be answered in the bonus episodes, please send them to podcast@grace-beverley.com with the subject beginning DILEMMAS or DM us @workinghardpod on instagram! + MY LINKS: https://gracebeverley.komi.io/ + RETROGRADE, SHREDDY, TALA and THE PRODUCTIVITY METHOD are my own businesses, therefore any mention of them - whilst not being a sponsorship - is monetarily endorsed. Jennifer Robinson has spent her career standing beside people who have found themselves up against some of the most powerful institutions in the world. The Australian human rights lawyer has represented Julian Assange and Amber Heard, and her new documentary Silenced examines what can happen to women who speak publicly about violence and abuse. In this episode of No Filter, Jennifer talks to Kate Langbroek about the grandmother who inspired her life’s work, what she witnessed while representing Amber Heard, and how social media shaped the public response to the Depp-Heard case. She also explains why Brittany Higgins’ story became central to Silenced, and the extraordinary personal cost that speaking out can carry. Jennifer also takes Kate inside her 14-year fight to help bring Julian Assange home, and reflects on what that case taught her about power, the media and her continuing belief that change is possible. At the heart of the conversation is a difficult question: what is the price women pay for speaking out, and how do we make it safer for them to use their voice? Silenced is in cinemas now. The Gwyneth Paltrow Episode

Gwyneth Paltrow came over today and it turns out we have a lot of Gwyneth Paltrow-related questions. This is the woman who introduced the world to yoni steaming and conscious uncoupling. A woman whose impact on culture is so specific, and so memorable, that we actually spent $600 of our own money to acquire a discontinued vagina candle on the black market. Today Gwyneth answers all of our most burning questions: Why’d she start Goop? Did she start the weird celebrity baby name trend? And why can’t Dave get the caesar dressing placed directly inside his Goop chicken caesar salad wraps? To be clear, he’s nitpicking only because he’s so passionate about the brand. In fact, Dave is such a genuine Goop fan that he was already eating it before Gwyneth arrived, but wants all of you to know this is not an ad, even though Benny is apparently a Goop investor, which does feel like a minor conflict of interest on some level. Anyways, thanks for watching! The Midlife Curiosity Tour That Changed Everything | Allison Aubrey

Allison Aubrey walked into a longevity lab expecting a great story. She walked out believing she was failing at key parts of her own life. After 25 years as one of NPR's most trusted health and science reporters, Aubrey agreed to a battery of tests meant to measure her biological age, and the results rattled her enough to send her on a curiosity tour, looking for answers that had nothing to do with biology.  What she found became her new book, Your Turn, a reframing of the years between 50 and 75 as a third turn, the part of life where, against every expectation, a hidden surge of energy and purpose becomes possible. In this conversation, Jonathan and Allison get into the moment a lab technician's offhand comment sent her into a spiral, the recurring dream that a professional dream analyst helped her decode, and the real reason she finally stepped away from the newsroom rhythm she'd built her 25-year identity around. You'll hear how she distinguishes passion from purpose from simply mattering, and why one of those three actually shows up in your bloodwork. You'll hear the real stories behind her "curiosity tour," including a retired police officer who found her purpose as the last person walking a community 5K, and a scientist who left a powerful research job to pull invasive vines off trees in her own neighborhood. And you'll hear the simple, repeatable patterns Allison found across dozens of women from all walks of life who made real pivots, one that starts by going inward before it ever asks you to go outward. If you've ever wondered whether the pull toward something different in your life is real or just restlessness, this conversation offers something rare: actual evidence, and actual permission. You can find Allison at: It's Your Turn Substack | Instagram | Episode Transcript Next week, we're sitting down with Bella DePaulo to talk about what it actually means to be single at heart, and why some of the deepest, most authentic lives being lived right now aren't built around a partner at all. Midlife Design Lab: I'm opening up an intimate retreat with me and a small, curated group in Boulder, CO (Oct 24-25, 2026), followed by 3 months of virtual group coaching. Why Trying to “Sound Smart” is Losing You the Room with Strategic Story Producer Rob Willis

Have you ever sat through a presentation and felt your attention just start to…drift? Chances are, it wasn't the content. It was the delivery. A year ago, Rob Willis was a corporate trainer with years of experience and a sharp eye for what makes people listen. He wondered if what he taught in workshops would resonate with a larger audience. So he started making short videos that break down what makes great speakers great: from their word choice, to structure, to the energy they brought to any room or conversation.  Rob even made a video breaking down my method of public speaking. In his video,  Rob dissects my signature opening line, and my friends couldn't stop sending it to me. One hundred videos in one hundred days later, Rob's videos are going viral on a regular basis, and a whole new audience is eager to learn from him. But what I find most interesting about Rob is where he actually learned all of this. Not in a classroom. He learned it by giving free walking tours in Berlin, where nobody pays up front and anyone can leave at any moment. If you're boring, people simply walk away — no tip, no small talk, just people voting with their feet. Rob and I discuss what that taught him about holding a room, why the smartest person in the room is rarely the most persuasive one, and the handful of simple, almost mechanical shifts that separate a forgettable pitch from one people actually remember. In this episode you'll learn: ➡️ Why "if I just explain it better" is the most common, and most inaccurate, assumption speakers make ➡️ Rob's trick for holding anyone's attention, whether it's a boardroom or a crowd on a street corner ➡️ What real charisma is made of (hint: it's not confidence, it's belief) ➡️ Why so many people suddenly sound fake the moment they step on stage ➡️ 5 things you can do in your next meeting to immediately present better  You don't need a TED Talk on your calendar to get something out of this one. Any of us who wants to be understood — in a meeting, a pitch, a hard conversation — will find something worth stealing. This… is A Bit of Optimism. + + + This episode is brought to you by SAP.
