Scam phone calls: fraud, technology and other hang ups

Guest: Christine Dobby, business reporter Scam calls are an annoying and growing problem that cost Canadians $57 million in losses last year. With a technological arms race between con artists, phone companies and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), there is no clear path to stop calls. Shanaplan in shambles

Guest: Legendary sports broadcaster Dave Hodge, formerly of TSN and Hockey Night in Canada When Brendan Shanahan took over the helm of the Maple Leafs in 2014, he vowed not to repeat the sins of various predecessors accused of rushing the team-building process. Shanahan insisted he would exercise patience. But after eight post-season runs in which the Maple Leafs have only once advanced beyond the opening round, Shanahan's refusal to give up on the team's core stars is accompanied by the reek of stubborn incompetence. Here Arthur, Feschuk and Hodge try to make sense of Shanahan's approach while pointing out the glaring blind spots that have left the Maple Leafs a long way away from interrupting the longest Stanley Cup drought in the history of the NHL, 57 years and counting. 'If I can finish it, I will': the inside story of Terry Fox's run

Guest: Bill Vigars, author of "Terry & Me" It was 43 years ago when Terry Fox dipped his leg in the Atlantic Ocean and embarked on a run across the country to raise money for cancer research. He ran 5,373 kilometres in 143 days before his cancer would return and end his run in Thunder Bay, Ont. Fox's dream of raising $1 for every Canadian would be realized, though. Canadians and others around the world run annually in his place and have raised over $850 million dollars for critical research. Bill Vigars, one of the people closest to Fox, is the author of the new book "Terry & Me" and joins "This Matters" to share more about the man behind the Marathon of Hope. To mask or not to mask, that is (still) the question

Guest: Todd Coleman, epidemiologist and assistant professor of health sciences at Wilfred Laurier University The president and CEO of SickKids begged people last week to wear a mask as pediatric ICUs across Ontario hit a breaking point. She's not alone in that wish. Calls have been growing for the province to bring back mask mandates as health experts warn of a difficult viral season with a "triple threat" of the flu, RSV and COVID-19. Despite this, Ontario's top doctor Dr. Kieran Moore has so far only encouraged people to voluntarily mask indoors and he has not inspired many. Do we need a mandate to follow public health advice and mask? We take a deep dive into government messaging and public psychology around masking. Kate makes $65,000 a year as a communications specialist at a non-profit. She has no debt and lives in Burlington, Ontario, with her partner.
