Connecting the Dots: Africa’s Year Ahead

In the first episode of this season, Oge is joined by Fonteh Akum, Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), and Raymond Gilpin, Chief Economist and Head of Strategy at UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa, to reflect on the defining moments of 2025 and explore what 2026 may hold for the continent. While 2025 brought few surprises, it reinforced trends that had long been taking shape on the continent. From the drastic shift in U.S. policy toward Africa to the spread of youth movements, evolving security challenges, and shifting economic dynamics, these trends define a pivotal moment for the continent. Economically, Africa continued its recovery from the long-term impacts of COVID-19, alongside a notable shift in investment from the public sector toward the private sector. Looking ahead to 2026, the conversation underscores the importance of consistency and of connecting the dots between security, development, finance, and governance.

Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General: Tthe threat to international law from power

“There are those that believe the power of law should be replaced by the law of power” Anna Foster speaks to Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, about the threat to international law from states acting through power and influence instead, in particular America. Defending the rule of law is necessary, he says, if we are to have a better world. He also sets out the case for reform of the UN Security Council to allow it to remain effective and relevant in the face of increasingly complex global conflicts. Antonio Guterres has been at the head of the United Nations since 2017, and is now entering his final year in office. Thank you to the Today team for its help in making this programme. Elon Musk's Origin Story -From Apartheid South Africa to Silicon Valley Billionaire

Join Maxwell Slate, your sharp-tongued, fedora-wearing host, as he traces Elon Musk's remarkable journey from the apartheid streets of Pretoria to Silicon Valley's gleaming towers. In this captivating episode of "Elon Musk," Maxwell weaves together the threads of a young programmer's escape from South Africa, his strategic moves through Canada and the Ivy League, and his first taste of entrepreneurial gold with Zip2 and PayPal. With his signature blend of theatrical flair and political insight, Maxwell explores how a restless kid with a Commodore computer became a dot-com millionaire, examining the formative experiences that would shape one of our era's most controversial figures. From sleeping on office floors to selling companies for hundreds of millions, this is the origin story of a man who would later promise to colonize Mars and revolutionize transportation. Maxwell delivers this tale with his characteristic mix of Broadway drama and Beltway wisdom, connecting the dots between early ambition and later world-changing ventures. It's biography meets cultural criticism, served with a side of jazz-riff storytelling that only Maxwell can deliver. Ready for more thought-provoking content that cuts through the noise? Karol Nawrocki, Polish President: Europe has lost its way

Nick Robinson speaks to Polish President Karol Nawrocki about Trump, Russia and the future of Europe. A historian and a boxer by background, he was elected in June 2025 with the support of Poland’s conservative opposition Law and Justice Party. A social conservative and devout Catholic, he is also an outspoken critic of the European Union and staunch supporter of Donald Trump, believing that the US President is the only person who can stop the threat to Europe from Vladimir Putin’s Russia: "Europe for a number of years was involved in not so important things, in ideological issues such as Green Deal for instance, climate policy, migration issues. It was not building its resilience and its security." The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. Mustafa Suleyman, Artificial Intelligence pioneer: People should be healthily afraid of AI

BBC presenter Amol Rajan speaks to the British artificial intelligence entrepreneur Mustafa Suleyman, Chief Executive of Microsoft AI. He believes in the enormous potential of AI to be a force for good in the world, changing how we live and work for the better. He is committed to developing a humanist superintelligence, one that always works to serve people and never vice versa. But he remains clear about what he sees as the risks, issuing a warning that without the right ethical safeguards, AI could grow powerful enough to overwhelm humanity. "As somebody who’s deeply techno-optimistic, I invite people to be also healthily afraid and sceptical," he says. The son of a London taxi-driver and a nurse, he dropped out of Oxford University and by his mid-twenties had co-founded DeepMind, the pioneering artificial intelligence research lab. By the time it was sold to Google four years later in 2014, it was worth a reported $400 million. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The TAP Project: Insights from Ecuador's Exploration of Canada's Indigenous Justice System

Discover the impact of the Technical Assistance Program (TAP) through the experience of the Ecuadorian delegation at CIAJ's 2024 Symposium on Indigenous Justice System. Hosted by Christine O'Doherty, the Honourable Milton Enrique Velasquez Diaz, Justice of the National Court of Justice of Ecuador, explores how TAP facilitates exchanges between judicial experts and justice system actors, while supporting global reform efforts. This dialogue highlights lessons learned from the Canadian system on indigenous justice issues, and their relevance in an international context. ABOUT THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PARTNERSHIP PROJECT (TAP): Global Affairs Canada's Technical Assistance Partnership Project (TAP), is designed to deploy Canadian experts from a range of disciplines to provide technical assistance to developing countries. The Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs (FJA) is one of the Canadian government agencies with an international development project under TAP. Under TAP, FJA engages with up to three countries per year for a one-year program of capacity building for judicial institutions. This mechanism allows Canada to use the experience in our judicial system to respond to requests for technical assistance made through Canadian missions abroad. Technical assistance is provided in response to needs expressed by partner countries, but in alignment with Canada's international development priorities, including the strengthening of gender equality and the protection of human rights.
