Divine Identity Creates Unity with Shima Baughman

We’d all like to open our arms wider to include others, understand each other and avoid the divisions we see in the world around us. So how do we look at others who are different from us with, as Elder Soares puts it, “the Savior’s eyes”? "The more we treat people as sisters, the more they'll feel that sisterly love." Today's guest is Magnify contributor Shima Baughman. Shima grew up in Iran, immigrated to the U.S. when she was little, and is now an author and law professor. This makes her an ideal person to share how we can bring more unity to our relationships inspired from Elder Soares' most recent address "Brothers and Sisters in Christ." Shima and Kathryn discuss her three spiritual takeaways. Shima's three spiritual takeaways: Love them because he loves them. Our goal is to reach a kind of love where there is no light or differences between us. Where are are all one. Shima shares a story about helping a refugee mother and her own personal experience of being an immigrant, and how the Spirit whispered to her, "you are sisters." Picture everyone wearing white. Shima shares a thought she had while serving in the temple. We are united not only in purpose when we go to the temple, but we are physically all wearing the same thing: white. Wearing white tells a bigger story, which is that we are all united and made clean through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Divine identity creates unity. Shima shares the invitation that our prophet extended us: focus our identities on being children of God, children of the covenant, and disciples of Christ. This will bring us together more than anything. Differences can bring us closer. Small and simple challenge: Ask Heavenly Father for ways that we can be enlightened through the Holy Ghost for ways we can improve on being united with others. One example Shima shares is to try to not treat people that are less-active or different from other ward members as less-than. Instead of inviting them to a church activity, ask them to bring something. Make them feel a part of the cause. SHOW NOTES Remember how I said that there was another story for another day? well here it is. How Neighbor Steve Saved Me from The Backyard Burglar by KaRyn Daley Lay I didn’t even know that anything was wrong until I opened the door to find the police standing on my porch. I had heard the pounding knocks while I was getting out of the shower and quickly threw some clothes on thinking that it was probably a neighbor or a salesperson (although, why in the world would there be sales people at 8:30am on a weekday?Pest Control?). Instead, I was greeted by two of Salt Lake’s finest who informed me that my neighbor had called 911 regarding a home invasion that was in process at my house. RIGHT NOW. Stunned, I walked with them to the back of my house where they pointed out the footprints in the fresh snow that seemed to be going back and forth between two windows, both of which had bent frames where someone had clearly tried to jimmie the window open --- One of those was the window to the bathroom where I had been just minutes before. Apparently, when the intruder had not found luck with the windows, he had tried to kick in the back door. The door was damaged, but had not quite given in. Thank goodness. I was shaken to say the least. I called my husband Justin who had already left for work and we tried to piece together what must have happened. We’d had a rash of burglaries in our neighborhood in the recent months, so that part wasn’t at all surprising. But the fact that someone had tried to get in while I was home was super weird. We figured that they had made their way to the back of the house in the time that I was gone to the gym (back when I did such things) and Justin had left for work, and while they were going between windows and doors, I had come back and gone into the house to shower. Maybe they were so tweaked out on drugs or adrenaline that they hadn’t heard the car drive in? Or maybe they had. I shuddered to think about the latter option. We learned later that there was another drama playing out at the house just behind ours. We share a fence with Steve and his wife Rachel and when we’re standing on our respective porches in the winter when the trees are bare, we can just barely peek over the fence and see the back of each other’s houses. That morning, Rachel was making breakfast when she noticed something outside the kitchen window. She couldn’t quite make it out, but it looked like someone was trying to break into our house. She yelled to her husband who, because of his SWAT training and emergency work was the resident neighborhood protector. Steve, who was in the middle of getting ready for the day and wasn’t even fully dressed yet, threw on some sweat pants and grabbed his gun while Rachel called the police. He told me that he was just waiting for them to break in so he could hop the fence and catch them mid-burglary because then the police were sure to catch them...He ran to his porch, barefoot in the snow, waiting and watching. And then he saw my car in the driveway and realized that I was in the house. As Steve says in the podcast, he “loves making decisions under duress in a time competitive environment” and he now knew that the stakes were much higher so he made a decision right then and there to change tactics. He yelled loudly and waved his gun around at the burglar letting them know he was there and he was coming for them. The burglar got spooked and ran off. The police took pictures of the shoe print in the snow and left with the promise to

Michael McLean: Embracing a Father’s Love

In recent years, Michael McLean has encountered profound lessons about a father’s love. Although seemingly a shining light of optimism and success known for his work in the Latter-day Saint film and music space, McLean grappled with chronic depression, fostering self-doubt for an extended period. Nearly two decades ago, when his son came out and conveyed discontent about his upbringing, McLean's deepest insecurities seemed validated. Moreover, the silence from a perceived absence of God amplified his distress. The Shape of God's Embrace with Eme Martin

Have you ever felt like you have to earn God’s love? Or maybe like you’re not sure if he really knows you? We've all been there, and it can often keep us from feeling the love God is always offering us. So how do we learn to really recognize the Savior and receive His love? "His promises are throughout the love note of His word." In today's episode, Magnify contributor Eme Martin joins Kathryn as they discuss the spiritually saving reminders from Elder Robert Daines' General Conference address, "Sir, We Would Like to See Jesus," and Kathryn gives us some behind-the-scene details about her brother's process for writing this talk. Eme's three spiritual reminders: Learn of Him The gospel is not an exclusive thing where only some people deserve the love, forgiveness, and mercy that Jesus offers, but it sometimes feels like we are isolated in that way. Eme shares that when we learn who Jesus Christ really is, we will feel the love that he has for us. Lean into His love Elder Daines said, "covenants are the shape of God's embrace," and that is the love that Eme describes she feels she needs to lean into. Sometimes we have to find others who embody that love and lean on them to help us grow closer to the Savior. Love like He loved The Lord personifies love. His every invitation is to love God and love people, and when we serve and "stand in the river of God's love" like Elder Daines described, we will find that we are filled with more and more of His love. Jorge Cocco Santángelo: Portraying Christ in Art

Argentine artist Jorge Cocco Santángelo has long been admired for combining cubism and sacred subjects in his paintings. But Latter-day Saints may not realize that Jorge, a convert who was baptized in 1962, introduced the Church to an entirely new style and forged the path for other artists to portray the sacred in different ways. His paintings, frequently displayed in the Church History Museum and known for their rich colors and angular shapes, are often of Bible scenes or the Savior Himself. Russell Osguthorpe: Attachment, Relationships, and God's Plan

Latter-day Saints may best recognize Russell Osguthorpe's name from his time as Sunday School general president. But they may not know he has a background in psychology and was serving as a stake president when he noticed that healthy attachment could be developed in relationships as long as a desire for improvement existed. Since then, he has been devoted to better understanding attachment theory from an academic, clinical, and spiritual perspective.
