Applying 'Extreme Ownership' to your career: are you an elbow patcher or an entrepreneur?

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us! Inger and Jason catch up on Inger's 24th wedding anniversary (with Mr Thesis Whisperer's permission!). Inger went to Newcastle in the Tesla and had fun doing a workshop in a bathroom. It's been a weird couple of weeks: she also encountered giant animatronic wombats on the lawns of parliament house while taking part in an NTEU event. Jason's had Covid in the house (9:47), but avoided getting it, despite using his Aunt's method of taking temperature of kids via hugging. He's finally going back to just two jobs (thank goodness) and trying to work out how to not overwhelm the big boss when she gets back. Jason and Inger talk about how they were interview by Andrew for The Omni Show (18:48) and are just a little bit excited that they got retweeted by Ken Case (squee!). At 24:46 there's some talk about Navy SEALS and our #deathcagematchreadathon with @tseenster on Twitter. Inger's been reading 'Extreme Ownership' by Jocko Willing and Leif Babin while Jason has been reading a romance called 'Everyday, Average Jones' by Susan Brockmann. They also made @tseenster read one, but she hasn't left a speak pipe review yet (no pressure Tseen!). Then they both unpack the lessons from 'Extreme Ownership: how US Navy SEALs lead and win' (40:38) Using a slide deck to guide the conversation. Inger applies three of the lessons (extreme ownership, Believe and Plan) to the problems of academic life, specifically designing a career for yourself (1:01:58). The pair discuss her theory there are two types of academic 'elbow patch' (who spend their careers in deep study becoming The Expert) and Entrepreneur (the ones who are agile to survive). They debate the pros and cons of both career choices and then how to fit into the broader mission of a university (1:13:39) and then go on to drop the knowledge about how to use the university strategic planning process to basically Get What You Need (1:22:48). They close out with talk about necrotic robots (yes, reanimating dead spiders - shudder) and the terrifying footage of a robot dog with a crazy accurate machine gun strapped to its back (1:42:59). Copperplate

Copperplate Gothic is probably already on your computer. It comes pre-loaded on many. It has been there this whole time, quietly convincing people it's elegant. It is not elegant. In this episode, we examine why Copperplate has become the go-to typeface for business cards, law firms, and anyone who wants to seem serious — and why designers have described it as a "hodgepodge," a "pastiche," and, memorably, "like bad cherries." Along the way you'll learn more than you strictly needed to know about display typefaces, how they were a product of technological disruption, and — as a bonus — drop caps. We also get to revisit our old mate Frederic (no K) Goudy, and briefly, his consistently under-credited wife Bertha Matilda "Woman Printer of the Year" Goudy. Along the way Anitra and Inger take detours into what it means to be a "real twin," and Jason reveals an unexpected and extensive (and slightly disturbing) knowledge of the work of Sean Connery. Academic permafrost and the vital few

It's the last episode of On the Reg before Jason goes on #epictrip2021 but don't worry - Inger will keep the ship afloat with a guesthostapolooza until he returns. Before he leaves Jason just has a bit more marking to do as well as tricking out the Jeep. Inger is relieved her dislocated toe no longer looks like a balloon animal and that Thesis Whisperer Jnr will still put the seat warmers on in the Tesla when he picks her up from work. We are excited to announce the release of our first book together! We've written a 50, A4 page 'look book ' of TextExpander snippets to inspire you to automate some of your academic email life. In the word problems segment, Inger reads 'The Culture Code' by Daniel Coyle and finds out all the starting conditions for teams to perform well are essentially missing in academia. She now plans to send the book to her Vice Chancellor, Brian Schmidt, so that he can get to work on fixing it! Jason read 'Essentialism' by Gary McKeown while standing in the queue to get vaccinated for 6 hours and was annoyed to discover that it only took Inger 2 hours to read the same book. Her dominance at competitive reading is now fully explained! We decided that it was a good book with lots of juicy nuggets, once you get past the first chapter. Jason has read a paper on Vaping and Inger owns up to being an ex-smoker who misses it, and is happy to get a contact high at parties. Meanwhile Inger has read a paper which measures how long academics go over time on conference talks and the results will - and won't - surprise you. Finally in our 2 minute tips, Jason has an app to make lists with and Inger has a quick way to make sure you don't go over time on your next conference talk (it's easy people!). Emergency election typeface pod: 'The Balto conspiracy?'

Inger gathered the team for an emergency pod about Balto the 2013 typeface chosen for the Harris Waltz campaign. After one failed attempt – which tested Inger’s patience about kerning — we nailed it (although we may inadvertently start some new political conspiracy theories by talking about the adventures of a plucky Disney dog also named Balto, not to mention the problematic choice of Perpetua for Obama’s first campaign). Anitra talks too much about columns and typeface rubbings and Jason tries to take the higher ground, while Inger briskly moves us along. We then revisit past presidential campaign typeface choices, and argue about Optima. Finally we add to Trump’s growing list of indictments by pointing out he has also committed type crimes. Twitter is a hot mess - do we have to start Tootin' on the Masty now?

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us! Buckle up folks, this is a long one! It's been a big couple of weeks since Jason and Inger caught up. Inger went to Tassie and experienced crossing bass strait in gale force winds on the way back while Jason got rained on while camping and discovered 'Truckie Twitter' on the UHF band radio during an unexpected 2.5 hour journey home from work.... Oh, and Thesiswhisperer Jnr is now being paid to play with puppies at a pet store, which Inger and Jason agree is a great career choice and maybe one they should consider. There's a very full mailbag (17:23), with lots of nice feedback on our Obsidian episode and a speak pipe by friend of the Pod, Shainal - who is going to be car pooling with Jase now he's working at Latrobe too. Our work problem segment (26.37) is the big story of the week: The Big Twitter Meltdown. Inger and Jason dig in for more than an hour on the topic of tweeting/tooting while academic and it goes to a surprisingly reflective place. There's a discussion guide that will be helpful we think and talk of algorithmically shaped behaviours, soft power, vitality and server architectures constructing realists - even Erving Goffman gets a mention. Even if you don't Tweet or Toot, there's stuff to think about in here because online life is still real life and this Twitter ruckus has real world consequences, but if you are looking to make the jump of Twitter, Inger has lots of Thoughts and a few suggestions for getting started. Bottoming our way through pandemic lockdowns (with lavender mist and pills)

Inger recorded this guestapooloza version of On The Reg just before Canberra was locked down... as she says in the pod "things might change before you hear this". Luckily her guest was Narelle Lemon from the Wellbeing Whisperer, who was able to impact many relaxation tips. Inger is crap at relaxing, so Narelle's suggestions were extremely helpful. The pair have a surprisingly intense conversation about sleep: how to fall asleep, stay asleep and annoy your partner with the pillow that must go between your knees when you have 'academic back'. Amongst other topics discussed are 'data knitting', the importance of the inner rebel, how to take a compliment, acupuncture and the online attention economy. Ai powered research workflows: Inger finally realises her dream to become a cyborg

Akzidenz Grotesk

Originally Anitra thought this typeface was designed by a woman, and because she is the only person authorized to speak about typefaces designed by a woman Anitra did the research for this episode. Sure, Jason is in touch with his feminine side, but not enough to be brave enough to speak (and he is too young and pretty to be canceled). Turns out Anitra was almost completely wrong, this typeface was created by a bunch of women — maybe. Although kind of no one designed this typeface too? Anyway, it wasn’t what we expected, but Anitra claims she is still right about who designed it, but in an unexpected way, and Jason is not contesting this. We are sorry it took so long for Season 2 to drop listeners, but get ready for more Type Pod. Now Anitra has figured out how to use Descript again there's more episodes coming! Networking is more than nibbling wine and cheese (in a doomsday bunker)

Tseen Khoo (@tseenster) from the Research Whisperer Blog joins Inger to talk about a topic that gets them both fired up: networking. They share their networking tips and techniques, especially the stuff that works online during Covid times when the dreaded wine and cheese events are no longer available (hooray!). Inger reckons they are both pretty judgy about how networking is taught to researchers, but Tseen prefers to think they are 'discerning'. They share their tips for shy people who want to network, as well as musing about the burnt tire aroma of International Roast coffee and the reason their children don't know how to send actual letters. Inger has been reading a book about doomsday bunkers while Tseen has a couple of excellent newsletters scooped from Substack. We finish with 2 minute tips as usual, and include a bonus bit of Jason who phoned in from an underground cafe in Cooper Pedy. 'Good waste' and yak shaving

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us! This week Inger is joined by Jonathan O'Donnell from the Research Whisperer as Jason is still away on #epictrip2021. Jonathan has given us lots of suggestions for On The Reg, so now is the time to talk to him directly! We start off talking about why innovation is hard inside universities, which have been fine tuned to avoid waste and increase transperency and accountability. This increases their sensitivity to risk. Sometimes the best way to get things done is through what Jonathan calls 'skunk works', which is exactly how Inger started Bootcamp at ANU. We travel over a lot of ground before we get to our reading segment. Inger has been reading Julia Banks' new book 'Power Play' and musing over 'Cognitive Flexibility'. Aside from reading about Anglo-Saxon history in the 900s, Jonathan has a fun read on the ridiculous morning routines of the influencer class and a fascinating article on 'ask vs tell' cultures, which can really help us work with others.
