Namen – über das Etikett, das uns prägt

Er steht in unserem Ausweis, auf unserem Briefkasten und in den Handies anderer Menschen, oft bringt er Erwartungen mit sich, manchmal auch eine Last. Unser Name begleitet uns ein Leben lang und ist ein Teil unserer Identität. Warum heißen wir, wie wir heißen? Was bedeuten unsere Namen? Und wie groß ist die Verantwortung einem Menschen einen Namen zu geben? In dieser Folge sprechen wir über all das und diese beiden Bücher: Mona empfiehlt: "Die Namen" von Florence Knapp Christine empfiehlt: "Frankie" von Jochen Gutsch Wie sehr prägt unser Name unser Leben? Mit dieser Frage beschäftigt sich die Autorin Florence Knapp in ihrem ersten Roman und zeigt uns drei Leben, die an einer einzigen Entscheidung hängen. Im Buch von Jochen Gutsch erzählt ein Kater von seinem Alltag und einer skurrilen Freundschaft zu einem Menschen, der in ihm einen neuen Lebenssinn findet. Yayoi Kusama verzaubert Punkt für Punkt die ganze Welt

Schon ihr allererstes Selbstbildnis mit zehn Jahren ist von jenem Stilmerkmal überzogen, das ihr ganzes Leben und Werk überstrahlen wird: Den Punkten. Ihnen bleibt sie treu - und sich selbst. Ganz früh findet Yayoi Kusama in der Kunst ein Mittel, der Halluzinationen und inneren Dämonen Herr zu werden. Erst in Japan und dann, ab 1957, in New York. Früh lernt sie dort Andy Warhol kennen, Donald Judd und Joseph Cornell - alle erkennen ihr unnachahmliches Talent. In der neuesten Folge von Augen zu, dem Kunstpodcast der ZEIT, erzählen Florian Illies und Giovanni di Lorenzo von Kusamas wilden Jahren in Amerika, als sie zu einer Pionierin der Performance-Kunst und der Happenings wird. 1977 dann kehrt sie nach Japan zurück und weist sich selbst in eine psychiatrische Klinik ein, in der sie bis heute lebt. Und zugleich überzieht sie ihre Leinwände und Skulpturen, vor allem ihre bekannten Kürbisse, mit ihren berühmten Punkten und Netzen. Alles verknüpft sie so mit allem, von einer großen Liebe zur Ganzheitlichkeit getrieben. Nach langen Jahren der Vergessenheit ist Kusama zurzeit die bekannteste Künstlerin der Gegenwart. The hidden history of blackface in America

In 2013, historian Rhae Lynn Barnes was researching blackface in America at the Library of Congress when she encountered something strange: Various primary sources on the subject were listed as "missing on shelf." It turns out that a librarian had purposely hid the materials to keep it from the KKK, which had a resurgence in the ‘80s. Barnes’s new book, ‘Darkology,’ looks at the proliferation of racist minstrel shows, and how amateur blackface became one of the most popular forms of entertainment in America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Barnes also explains how blackface fell out of fashion and then ultimately became taboo. “It is our patriotic duty as American citizens [to] help make sure that the American public has access to our history in all of its complexity,” she says.
