Imagine this: Standing under the dazzling, shifting Northern Lights of Norway, while biting into a Taiwanese gua bao filled with pickled mustard greens, crushed peanuts, and succulent braised pork belly.
Is such a magical-realist scene even possible? Meet Taiwanese-Norwegian: Wang Hsiang-Hsiang.
Back in Taiwan, Wang had never even fried a sunny-side-up egg. But while studying abroad, a curious classmate asked what lu rou fan (braised pork rice) tasted like. Pressured and clueless, she improvised a soy sauce-braised pork dish that didn’t quite resemble the original. That unexpected moment sparked a surprising, multifaceted life journey.
She majored in landscape architecture at university, later earning her master’s degree and professional certification in Norway. But it was her wildly popular gua bao that truly made her name—leading local restaurants to invite her as a guest chef.
After a decade of working in Norway, she finally earned her citizenship. Today, she leads a flavorful, multifaceted career:landscape architect, gua bao chef, and travel agency owner. She even hosted Jam Hsiao during his music video shoot in Norway.
Norway, a distant land in the far north, is vastly different from subtropical Taiwan in both mindset and daily life. Obtaining a driver’s license there took her three years and cost NT$150,000. Why?
