1.Playback theater–This is a uniqueform of improvisational performance createdby an American couple several decades ago. While it has connections to dramatherapy, it is fundamentally a performance, not a therapy session. The structureinvolves a conductor who invites audience members toshare true stories fromtheir lives. A team of performers, including actors and musicians, then instantlyimprovises a piece based on the shared story or emotion, presenting it back to thestoryteller and the audience as a gift.
2. Empathy–This word represents a core outcome and feeling generated byPlayback Theater. Katie describes the experience as "very empathetic" because itallows audience members to deeply connect with one another's stories. Bylistening to someone's personal experience and seeing it performed, people oftenrealize they are not alone in their feelings or situations. This shared understandinghelps build strong connections between strangers, fostering peace and reducingfear, which Katie believes is one of the main purposes of theater.
3. Performer–A performer in the context of Playback Theater is an actor ormusician who specializes in improvisation. Their role is to listen intently as anaudience member shares a personal story and then, on the spot, create and performa piece that reflects the story's emotions and narrative. This act is seen as giving a"gift" back to the storyteller.
