How to Talk to Kids About Politics and Encourage Critical Thinking

In this episode, Abbie Mood and Kristen Johnson dive into the challenges and opportunities of talking to kids about politics. They explore how to make these conversations age-appropriate, encourage curiosity, and help children think critically about the world around them. From processing emotions about political issues to understanding the role of activism and community involvement, they share insights on how to navigate these important discussions in a way that feels natural and engaging. Abbie and Kristen also talk about the complexities of teaching kids about morality, right and wrong, and how to approach conversations about political figures with care. They discuss practical resources to help parents facilitate meaningful discussions and highlight the importance of normalizing political conversations within families. At the heart of it all, this is your friendly reminder that there’s no one “perfect” way to parent. What really matters is creating a space where kids feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts. Key Takeaways: -Children are often more aware of political matters than we assume. -Encouraging children to express their feelings about political topics is crucial. -Allowing children to ask questions can reveal their underlying fears and concerns. -Discussing privilege helps children understand different societal circumstances. -Use open-ended questions to help children form their own conclusions. Meet Abbie & Kristen

New around here? Listen to this introduction to get to know Abbie & Kristen, what we're most concerned and most optimistic about with the new administration, and some of our favorite organizations to get involved with! In this episode, we mention: Indivisible: A grassroots movement of thousands of local Indivisible groups with a mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda. We just launched our Indivisible Guide and are hard at work connecting folks to existing groups and supporting new groups. MoveOn: A multi-issue organization using grassroots member power to organize on issues and elections to achieve an America where we can all thrive. MoveOn’s Mobilizer community is a place for individuals around the country to build community and take action on a range of issues. Public Citizen: Corporations have their lobbyists in Washington, D.C. The people need advocates too. That’s where we come in. We organize to put people ahead of corporate power and to make sure that no politicians succeed in putting themselves above the law. Join our community of democracy activists, including working to defeat Kash Patel’s nomination and defeating attacks on our democracy under the Trump administration. Working Families Party: The Working Families Party is made up of regular people from all backgrounds, united to create a better future for everyone. Our model is to build governing power through elections from the ground up, starting at the local level. Asian American Women's Political Initiative: A not-for-profit organization in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia that is the country’s only political leadership organization for AAPI women. Our 100+ alumni are Dreamers, anti-foreclosure activists who have experienced foreclosure themselves, LGBTQ rights advocates, and nonprofit entrepreneurs who found their political voice through AAWPI. Our model addresses the unique challenges AAPI women face, building community around a shared commitment to social justice. Over 90% of our alumni go on to work on campaigns, become organizers, or run for office themselves.
