    Freedom in Christ

This message challenges us to reconsider what true freedom really means, especially as we reflect on our nation's independence. While we celebrate 250 years of American liberty, we're reminded that biblical freedom runs much deeper than political rights or personal autonomy. The core truth here is striking: we were once slaves to sin, completely unable to choose God on our own. Romans and John's Gospel paint a sobering picture of our condition before Christ, describing throats like open graves and hearts full of bitterness. But Christ liberated us from this bondage, not so we could simply do whatever we want, but so we could think differently, love radically, and serve sacrificially. The real tension emerges when we realize that Christian freedom often means surrendering our rights for the sake of others. Paul's words in 1 Corinthians and Romans 14 reveal a countercultural principle: sometimes the most Christ-like thing we can do is not exercise our freedoms. Whether it's choosing not to sue a fellow believer, abstaining from certain foods to avoid causing a weaker brother to stumble, or putting aside our political passions to build up rather than tear down, we're called to ask different questions. Not 'What am I entitled to?' but 'What builds up? What glorifies God? What serves my neighbor?' This is the freedom Christ died to give us: freedom from self-centeredness, freedom to love extravagantly, and freedom to reflect His heart in a world desperately watching how we handle our liberties.
