Belly Button Musings

Harinder Virdee

"Belly Button Musings" is a podcast for anyone who wants to experience whimsical wisdom pulled from the navel. Each episode looks at an aspect of life chosen through intuition and experienced through life. The belly button is seen as spiritual and symbolic in many traditions representing a connection to the cosmic, the universe and ancestral wisdom. In yoga and Eastern philosophies, the navel is associated with the vital energy centre known as Manipura Chakra.    We share stories and gently explore life themes to improve our relationship to our lives, appreciating we are not alone in our experiences. We contemplate through the navel, with the energy of a light shower of rain, reflections and learnings to provide a new awareness and insight into how a life could be lived.

    Again, with Feeling

In this episode, Harinder explores the common experience of living life on autopilot, moving through daily tasks and to-do lists without regard for how they make us feel. She reflects on the potential for emptiness that arises when our actions lack emotional connection and proposes a powerful shift in perspective: what if we chose how we wanted to feel first, and then aligned our actions with that core emotion?  KEY TAKEAWAYS Many of our daily actions are performed ‘robotically’, often devoid of any tangible emotion or intentionality.  Instead of evaluating how a task made you feel after the fact, try deciding on a desired emotional state (e.g., peaceful, playful, powerful) beforehand and choosing activities that foster it. True fulfillment comes from infusing every step of a process with feeling and imagery, rather than solely focusing on the end result. Difficult emotions and setbacks are not failures; they are vital feedback mechanisms that help us widen our perspective and adjust our course toward emotional alignment. By naming and connecting with a core feeling (which Harinder calls ‘home’), we can create an internal GPS that alerts us when we are drifting away from our authentic selves. BEST MOMENTS "I've been questioning myself about why I do [these things] and I've been asking myself whether or not I'm even thinking about how they make me feel." "What if I focused first on how I wanted to feel and then I leant into that feeling?" "It isn't just about the acquisition of the end result. It's about infusing every single step I take on that journey." "The lows will teach me something. The lows will widen my perspective, my understanding. They will give me feedback in terms of what's working and what isn't." "At the heart of it, why do we do anything? Isn't it to feel a certain way?"  VALUABLE RESOURCES Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harinderkv LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/harinder-virdee-73a54630 HOST BIO I am Harinder. To All You Fixer-uppers Out There

Harinder and Alicia to explore the psychological and emotional landscape of being a fixer-upper. They share their personal histories of jumping in to solve others' problems as a way to seek external validation or manage their own anxieties. They pivot the conversation toward a more profound form of support: honoring the sovereignty of the other person. By sharing a touching recent experience where Alicia supported Harinder through a period of despair simply by listening and holding space, they illustrate how stepping back, rather than stepping in, allows for true individual evolution and mutual healing. KEY TAKEAWAYS We often try to fix others to heal unaddressed parts of ourselves or to gain a sense of value we aren't giving ourselves internally. Every person is a whole being with their own internal wisdom; intervening without being asked can actually disempower them. Shifting from a ‘fixer’ mindset to a ‘nurturer’ mindset means providing a safe environment for someone to grow at their own pace. Taking on the weight of someone else’s happiness or safety is an impossible task that often leads to resentment and ‘mixed up’ energies. True support often looks like ‘holding the lens wider’ for someone else, allowing them to see the beauty and solutions that already exist within their own lives. BEST MOMENTS "I saw if I can’t fix that, I have no value. Their happiness, their comfort, their safety depended on my ability to fix something. And boy, that is just not true." "Though the validation that it appears we are seeking is external, it’s actually internal, an opportunity for me to rewrite that history in a newer way." "It’s a mixing of energies and somewhere it’s got a bit mixed up. It’s not clear where their need or their want ends and where mine begins." "The trick is not to beat ourselves up for being in those both places, and recogni,e that we cannot control everything around us, but we can control how we see everything around us." "I haven't then learned the mechanism to get there myself, [holding space] is far more powerful than getting involved." 3. Celebration

    Celebration

Today, Harinder reunites with her friend Alicia to explore the multifaceted concept of celebration. Moving beyond the traditional definition of parties and milestones, they delve into the importance of inner celebration, the act of accepting oneself, acknowledging personal growth, and finding deep gratitude for simply being alive. From the simple joy of a perfectly cooked aubergine baba ghanoush to the liberating feeling of shedding the day's constraints, Harinder and Alicia discuss how intentionality and heart-set can transform mundane tasks into meaningful commemorations.  KEY TAKEAWAYS True celebration isn't just about external events; it’s rooted in self-acceptance, honoring one's choices, and feeling a deep sense of worthiness. By setting a conscious ‘heart-set’ or intention, even routine activities like cooking or eating can become celebratory acts of self-care. Great joy can be found in simple, everyday experiences, like the cosiness of a warm bed on a cold night or the freedom of being at home. In large gatherings, it’s easy to get lost in the logistics. Reconnecting with the underlying love and purpose of the event helps maintain the joy of the celebration. Approaching life with grace and being present allows us to celebrate our ‘beingness’, transforming how we interact with ourselves and the world. BEST MOMENTS "It wasn’t ever about the celebration on the outside; it was about the celebration on the inside." "The unsung hero of mental health and self-respect is self-celebration." "Celebration at its heart is very much about the appreciation and deep gratitude for being on this planet now." "How much attention do we put into our intention to celebrate?" "Imagine your belly button is smiling, and that smile just spreads through the body." 4. The Great Big Black Hole

    16. MÄRZ

    The Great Big Black Hole

In this soul-stirring episode, Harinder dives deep into the concept of the ‘Great Big Black Hole’, that looming sense of restlessness we create when we avoid our underlying emotions. Harinder explores the creative (and often destructive) ways we distract ourselves, from retail therapy to ‘doom scrolling’, and how these shadows only grow larger the longer they are ignored. Through a touching observation of her two-year-old nephew, she illustrates that the capacity to sit with, process, and release heavy emotions is an innate human gift we often lose in adulthood. This episode is a gentle call to stop running, face the darkness, and find the wisdom that only comes through emotional accountability. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ignoring underlying emotions creates a ‘shadow’ that grows legs and arms, following us as a persistent restlessness. We often use ‘busy-ness’, consumption, or numbing behaviors to avoid the discomfort of a simple feeling. Children possess an organic ability to process trauma and emotion physically and emotionally before they even have the language to describe it. Developing a vocabulary for our emotions is a crucial step in ‘picking apart the muddle’ of internal distress. True growth and ‘aliveness’ come from a willingness to be discombobulated and carried through the darkness to reach a state of neutrality. BEST MOMENTS "The more we choose not to deal with the underlying emotion, that restlessness grows." "I didn't have language to describe what I was feeling, and therefore that emotion didn't exist for me." "That shadow has grown arms and legs... it’s asking to be addressed." "What is more ‘aliveness’ than being fully connected to our emotions? To give ourselves that grace, that time." "Without the darkness, I can't be in my lightness. I can't have the wisdom without that darkness challenging me, tempering me, strengthening me." You, Me and ‘It’

Today, Harinder explores the concept of ‘the relationship’ as its own distinct entity. Moving beyond the standard ‘you and me’ dynamic, Harinder introduces a third element of ‘It’, to act as a buffer and a co-created vessel for mutual growth. By shifting the focus from individual blame to the needs of the relationship itself, she offers a path toward more honest, less defensive communication in all types of connections, from romantic to professional. KEY TAKEAWAYS View a relationship not just as two people interacting, but as a third ‘living, breathing organism’ that both parties must consciously nurture. Instead of attacking a partner for unmet personal needs, focus on what the relationship needs to survive and thrive. Using the ‘it’ framework creates a psychological buffer that makes communication feel safer and less like a personal attack. Each person is responsible for the quality of energy they pour into the ‘cauldron’ of the relationship. This ‘you, me, and it’ concept applies to all dynamics, including family, friendships, and work projects. BEST MOMENTS "What would happen if, as two creative beings, we decided to create an entity and call that 'the relationship'? You, me, and it." "It acts as a kind of a buffer. This entity that sits between me and somebody else." "Rather than this attacking of each other, we could look at what our ideal relationship might look like, might be like, and we agree to pour energy into that." "Am I coming from my highest good when it comes to that dynamic? It’s not about being a 'good person' per se, but am I coming from a place of the higher good?" "We all need a little bit more 'it' in our lives." VALUABLE RESOURCES Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harinderkv LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/harinder-virdee-73a54630 HOST BIO I am Harinder. 6. Living in Harmonious Union

    2. MÄRZ

    Living in Harmonious Union

In this episode, Harinder explores the intricate relationship between our internal state and our external connections. She delves into the concept of ‘living in harmonious union’ with oneself as a foundation for healthy relationships with others. Harinder shares personal anecdotes, including a taxing home renovation, to illustrate how recognising and balancing the ‘divine masculine’ (action and logic) and ‘divine feminine’ (intuition and feeling) within us can lead to greater self-compassion and emotional regulation.  KEY TAKEAWAYS External relationships often serve as a mirror to our internal state; when we are at peace within, our connections with others tend to be more productive and heartwarming. Achieving harmony involves consciously embodying both the divine masculine, characterised by assertiveness, logic, and protection, and the divine feminine, which focuses on intuition, receiving, and emotional understanding. Developing an ‘observer’ perspective allows us to notice our actions and decisions without immediate judgment, creating a space for self-appreciation. Taking the time to acknowledge our hard work, whether it’s making a difficult decision or performing physical labour, helps bring us back into emotional balance. True forgiveness for others begins with an intimate understanding of our own needs and motivations, allowing us to be accountable for our own well-being first. BEST MOMENTS "Any relationship with somebody else is very much a reflection of what's happening with that individual internally." "How do I create a more harmonious union with myself such that my external relationships are just an extension of the feelings that I already exude?" "Can the observer part of me adopt the feminine aspects and just pat that masculine aspect of myself and say, 'Well done for making a decision'?" "Harmony will always start from inside. It is a celebration of the steps, of the little things that we might do, the progress that we might make." "If I can't even open up to myself, what hope would I have of anyone else understanding what I'm going through?" Coming in Last

In this episode, Harinder explores the profound concept of ‘coming in last’ as a testament to resilience. Through personal anecdotes, ranging from a childhood quest for a specific movie sticker album to a long-awaited fashion purchase and a high school track race, Harinder reflects on the pain of being an outsider and the subsequent growth that stems from persistence.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Coming in last is often a story of endurance and the strength found in waiting for what you desire. When external resources are unavailable (like the sticker album), taking the initiative to create your own version can be a rewarding process of self-expression. Even when it feels like the world has moved on to the next trend, being true to your own timing and desires is what truly matters. The ego may tempt you to quit to find immediate relief, but if a goal is "true," that internal voice will eventually call you back to the path. The act of ‘coming in at all’, showing up and engaging with life, is the ultimate achievement, regardless of where you rank. BEST MOMENTS "Coming in last essentially is a story of resilience." "I remember feeling confused, because I’d put all these stickers in an exercise book now, and then this album had arrived." "I imagine [resilience] as a watercolor painting. Where I decide to drop the paint or the pigment is where it's the most vibrant." "The relief that I felt was like a false relief; it wasn't true. Because if what I wanted was true, there's a quiet inner voice that slowly becomes louder." "There’s almost no such thing as coming in last. The fact that we came in at all is what matters." Exploring the Deep Waters

In this soul-stirring episode, Harinder invites listeners to venture beyond the surface of their daily lives and dive into the ‘deep waters’ of their own psyche. Using the evocative metaphor of diving for pearls, Harinder explores the internal treasures, talents, gifts, and memories that often remain buried due to childhood conditioning or societal expectations. The episode serves as a gentle yet powerful call to reclaim one’s sovereignty by acknowledging every part of the self, including the shadows. KEY TAKEAWAYS We often present an edited version of ourselves to the world based on what we were told as children, that we were ‘too much’, ‘messy’, or ‘shameful’. True sovereignty is defined as putting your arms around all of yourself: what you like, what you don't like, and what you don't yet know. Many avoid their inner depths out of fear of what they might find, but without exploring these ‘caverns’, we never truly know who we are or what we are capable of. The journey inward is rarely logical; it is driven by emotions like curiosity, sadness, restlessness, or a longing for unanswered questions. Connecting with the ‘shadow self" allows for the release of suppressed energy and memories stored in the body, leading to a more colorful and fully realised life. BEST MOMENTS "Am I really living a full life? Do I really know all that I'm capable of? Do I know what treasures, what gifts, what talents I have that have always existed within me?" "I feel that we have a responsibility to know ourselves … to return to our sovereignty." "If I don’t take a torch down into my deep water, if I don’t take a light and explore those caverns, then what do I really have? What do I really know about who I am?" "The greatest love affair we have is with ourselves." "By understanding our own self more thoroughly, of course it’s going to change our relationship to the world."
