    Inside Russia's Wartime Economy

What does the Russian wartime economy look like beneath the official data – and what are the implications for regime stability? In early June, President Putin took to the stage at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum – Russia's flagship annual showcase for investors and international media – and delivered a characteristically assured account of an economy not just surviving but adapting. Sanctions, he suggested, had been absorbed. Western predictions of collapse had amounted to little more than wishful thinking. But if we look more closely at the current state of the Russian economy beyond the Kremlin narratives, the picture is more distorted. This is a classic war economy where growth is almost entirely a function of state defence orders, public spending has reached historically elevated levels, and the civilian economy is being systematically drained of labour, capital and technology to feed the military-industrial complex. In this episode, Natia Seskuria, Senior Research Fellow, Russian and Eurasian Security, is joined by RUSI Associate Fellow Charles Hecker, to discuss Russia's wartime economy and explore the following questions: What does the Russian wartime economy actually look like? As economic strain intensifies and the logic of state predation deepens, what are the implications for regime stability? If the conflict extends to another three to five years, how will Western corporate engagement with Russia evolve – and what risks does that trajectory create for sanctions coherence and Euro-Atlantic security? Some of the data and sector information in this podcast were sourced from The Bell, written by Alexandra Prokopenko and Alexander Kolyandr. More information on the Russian economy is available at their website: www.thebell.io.

Knowledge in the Age of Disinformation and AI

What does knowledge mean in an age of AI, deepfakes, and disinformation? When information is everywhere, the real challenge is distinguishing insight from noise. In this episode of the Development Podcast, host Toni Karasanyi explores how knowledge is evolving in a world where machines can generate convincing arguments and personalized realities shape how we consume information. Tech journalist Jamie Bartlett, author of How to Talk to AI (And How Not To), explains how individuals can use AI tools without being misled — and why critical thinking matters more than ever. Paschal Donohoe, the World Bank Group’s Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer, discusses how the Bank is turning more than 80 years of global development experience into practical knowledge that helps countries tackle challenges, including creating jobs and scale solutions in a fast-changing world. Beyond oil: what the Hormuz crisis means for Australia

Why is the Strait of Hormuz crisis about more than crude oil, and what does it reveal about Australia’s hidden supply-chain vulnerabilities?  What should investment in supply chain resilience look like for Australia?  Does the green transition reduce Australia’s energy security risks, or does it shift our dependence to new materials, technologies and supply chains?  How can Australia move from a ‘just in time’ to a ‘just in case’ approach to national resilience?    In this episode, Walter Colnaghi and David Leaney join Sharryn Parker to discuss what the Hormuz crisis means for Australia’s economic security.  Sharryn Parker is a Senior Policy Advisor at the ANU National Security College (NSC), on secondment from the Department of Defence.     Walter Colnaghi is a PhD candidate at the ANU School of Politics and International Relations and a Research Assistant at NSC.  David Leaney is a Lecturer at the ANU College of Business and Economics, and a specialist in international supply chain management.  TRANSCRIPT  Show notes   NSC academic programs – find out more Beyond the checkpoint: managing Australia’s border as a strategic economic and national security asset  We'd love to hear from you! Protests, politics and the killing of Henry Nowak

With the murder of 18 year old Henry Nowak sending shockwaves through Westminster and beyond, IfG senior fellow - and former BBC home affairs correspondent - Danny Shaw joins the podcast team to discuss a fraught week for the police and for politics. What questions do the police need to answer? What could an inquiry explore - and what might need to change? And how could the events of this week shape British politics in the months ahead? Plus: The footage of the riots in Southampton has knocked the Mandelson files off the front pages, but the ongoing saga has left some questions for government - not least how its key figures communicate with each other. WhatsApp is Westminster’s preferred way of talking - but is this good for scrutiny, for making decisions, and for transparency? Hannah White presents. With Alex Thomas and Alice Lilly.
