    Toi + Moi

• The Marriage Advice That Kept Them Together for 31 Years

The Marriage Advice That Kept Them Together for 31 Years

You can do everything right. You can love your spouse with everything in you. But if you don't understand that marriage takes more than just love, if you don't accept what you see before you say I do, and if you're not intentional about giving space when your partner needs to recalibrate, you'll miss the foundation that holds everything together. In this deeply vulnerable, profoundly insightful episode of Unbroken Podcast, host Richard Akita sits down with Elizabeth Irene and Rami Beatty, a couple with 31 years of marriage experience, for an unfiltered conversation that will challenge everything you think you know about what it takes to sustain a marriage, why acceptance is more powerful than resignation, and the uncomfortable truth that the wisdom that changed everything came from one simple instruction: look at this man you're marrying, look at what you like about him and look at what you don't like about him, and know that very little is going to change so decide now that you like what you see. Elizabeth Irene and Rami hold nothing back. They break down why she knew instantly at Achimota School Founders Day that this was the man she was going to marry even though it took him several meetings to even recognize her, why he would sulk for three days after a disagreement and she learned to give him space to process his emotions, and the one thing most couples refuse to accept: there's peace in acceptance and there's joy in acceptance but acceptance is not resignation. They reveal why time wars became a major issue because he was brought up in a family where everybody was a stickler for time and his mom would be shouting at six o'clock for a movie at 6:30, how she was only seven minutes late for their wedding and he's learned over the years to wait and watch when she's getting ready instead of getting ready too early and fuming, and the moment that changes everything: when they fought about naming their son two days before she left to give birth and in anger he said let's call him Rami but now they don't even remember the names they were fighting for. They also explain why venting to yourself works better than venting to someone because it can always end up in damage, how she processes things in her head and journals before coming to a conversation while he vents out loud when he's alone at home, and the one thing every couple needs to know: the fruit of the Spirit are expressed in situations that will make you learn to exhibit self-control or peace or love when you feel something less than love and it is within your own home that God is going to give you these opportunities. This isn't just marriage advice. It's a masterclass in understanding why romance is in your mind and you can organize your life systematically no matter how much money you make, why they still go on movie dates and she spoons towards him at bedtime even in her sleep, and how submission is not about one person controlling the other but about submitting to one another and compromising where sometimes one person gets 80% and another time the other person gets 80%. Elizabeth Irene and Rami dive into why a gentleman once congratulated him for allowing his wife to go do her master's and he thought to himself what do you mean I allowed her she has her brain she's the one who got first class, how their marriage has been very much a partnership and they've never explored the concept of submission in the traditional sense, and the uncomfortable reality that they don't plan for the empty nest because their children are welcome until they die and when the days come you just shift to accommodate the times. They also tackle why the love sustains the marriage through the difficult times and as long as the love is there the romance will follow, how they have their own individual pursuits and overlaps where he's her alpha reader and she benefits from his wonderful literature collection, and the one thing every person needs to understand: if you focus on yourself and your spouse well enough when the children leave nothing changes because it's just a continuation of where you were when you first started. If you're married, wondering whether love is enough to hold you together, or asking yourself how to accept what you see without resigning yourself to suffering, this conversation will give you the clarity, the language, and the courage to stop expecting your spouse to change and start accepting who they are so you can choose to be happy and build a marriage where both of you submit to one another and the love becomes the glue that holds everything together. Segment: Desperation DESTROYS Marriages

You can do everything right. You can love someone with everything in you. But if you don't understand that the adhesive holding your relationship together is not your love for each other but your individual pursuit of God, if you don't realize that a soulmate is not one person but an ideal that many can embody, and if you're not intentional about understanding that the unit of any relationship is the individual, you'll miss the foundation that makes everything else work. In this deeply personal, profoundly insightful episode of Unbroken Podcast, host Richard Akita sits down with Kojo Nganue, curator at One Man Thousand, for an unfiltered conversation that will challenge everything you think you know about what it takes to build a relationship that lasts, why she's not your soulmate but rather embodies an ideal, and the uncomfortable truth that the problem with most relationships is not the institution of marriage but the individuals who come together in that institution. Kojo holds nothing back. He breaks down why the soulmate framework is flawed because a soulmate is not a person but an ideal, why when you're looking for a soulmate you're looking for somebody who embodies this ideal and that's how come a soulmate will not look a certain way, and the one thing most people refuse to accept: different people can embody that same ideal. He reveals why the anima animus complex is a feminine part of every man that draws him to do things like his intuition and how he can conquer somewhere and cultivate it, how what draws you to another woman is that you see that part of you inside of her, and the moment you realize that wisdom was with God when he was creating the world and wisdom is personified as lady wisdom so instead of a person it's rather an ideal. He also explains why the word ezer which we describe as a helper is actually somebody who's indispensable and capable of things that you are not, how the only other time that word is used in scripture is describing God, and the one thing every man needs to understand: a help meet is God giving you himself. This isn't just relationship advice. It's a masterclass in understanding why the unit of any relationship is the individual, why even your relationship with God depends on you, and how once the individual is aware and can control themselves everything else will fall in line. Kojo dives into why if one egg is good and the other one is bad it will stink but if both eggs are good you have a good omelet, how the thing that secures this is that person A and person B are pursuing God, and the uncomfortable reality that it's not necessarily in terms of morality or a good or bad person but because both people are pursuing God you are assured that whatever comes out of that relationship will be great. He also tackles why it's like a triangle where both of you are the sides of the triangle and God is on top, how the closer you get to God the closer you get to each other, and the one thing every couple needs to accept: without this pursuit and you find each other there's no adhesive that holds you together. If you're in a relationship, wondering whether love is enough to hold you together, or asking yourself why your past relationships didn't work even though the person seemed perfect, this conversation will give you the clarity, the language, and the courage to stop chasing one person as your soulmate and start pursuing God first so that when you find each other in that pursuit you have the adhesive that keeps you together.
