In Episode 61 of the E-commerce Leader Series, Eric Bidinger sits down with Stephanie Crespin, Founder & CEO of Reflaunt, the technology company helping some of the world's leading fashion and luxury brands build resale directly into their own customer experience. Reflaunt's "resale-as-a-service" model turns secondhand from a competitive threat into a strategic growth channel — letting a brand's own customers resell past purchases for cash or store credit, while keeping the relationship, and the data, in the brand's hands. Stephanie has been in re-commerce since 2014, when she built one of Southeast Asia's first secondhand luxury marketplaces, StyleTribute, which she sold in 2018. The insight that led to Reflaunt: managed-resale marketplaces were inefficient and capped by a glass ceiling, and the real breakthrough was connecting first-hand and secondhand into one journey — bringing resale upstream into the moment of purchase. She launched in 2019, straight into COVID, but with early backing from luxury incubators like LVMH and Fashion for Good, and a first flagship brand in Balenciaga. The early resistance centred on three fears: cannibalising first-hand sales, brand dilution and stigma, and the risk of counterfeits and quality. What unlocked it was sustainability topping CEO agendas, resale's appeal to younger audiences, and — crucially — framing it as a retention and loyalty tool rather than discounted secondhand selling. Buying pre-loved has flipped from stigma to badge of honour worldwide, with the US now the biggest market. This is where it gets clever. When customers know they can recapture residual value later, they convert sooner, trade up to more expensive pieces, and buy more often — resale acts almost like a built-in return policy. Reflaunt then retargets at the ideal moment, when the wardrobe is emptied and cash is freed up, offering cash or incentivised store credit that pulls the customer back and locks in share of wallet. Brands that offer it gain a real loyalty edge over those that don't. Stephanie is clear that Reflaunt is a technology company first — a "spiderweb" integrating brands, warehouses, marketplaces, logistics, customs and payments, and managing rich per-SKU data she likens to a digital product passport. AI now powers much of that work: image recognition to build product listings, pricing recommendations, first-pass authentication, and dramatically faster marketplace integrations. Looking to 2030, she sees shopping moving away from single-brand storefronts toward multi-brand carts, resale value shown before you buy, and secondhand pricing increasingly setting the price of new — with AI accelerating both the transparency and the scale. Whether you're building a brand, running a retail channel, or thinking about where circular commerce and AI intersect, this episode is full of sharp, forward-looking insight. 🎧 What you'll learn in this episode: How resale-as-a-service turns secondhand into a growth and loyalty channelWhy connecting first-hand and secondhand beats standalone resale marketplacesHow Reflaunt overcame brand fears of cannibalisation and dilutionThe way resale changes conversion, upsell and repeat purchaseRetargeting customers at the perfect moment: empty wardrobe, freed-up cashWhy Reflaunt is a tech and data company, not an e-commerce storeHow AI powers product listings, pricing, authentication and integrationsWhat fashion retail could look like by 2030 💡 Key takeaways: Resale is a retention and loyalty tool, not just discounted secondhand sellingKnowing they can recapture value makes customers convert, trade up and returnThe winning model keeps the customer and the data with the brand, not a third partyAI is what finally makes single-SKU resale scalable 🛍️ Connect with Stephanie Crespin & Reflaunt: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniecrespin/ Website: https://www.reflaunt.com About Luca Luca is an AI operating system for e-commerce leaders — connecting marketing, finance, operations and data into a single intelligence layer that helps founders make faster, sharper decisions. 🔗 Connect with Luca here: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ask_luca LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asklucaai/ Website: https://ask-luca.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the E-commerce Leader Series A podcast exploring how founders and operators are navigating the future of e-commerce with AI, automation, and new technologies.
