    Maladie psychique chronique, les troubles bipolaires constituent, selon l’OMS, l’une des principales causes de handicap psychiatrique. En général, les personnes concernées connaissent une alternance entre des épisodes maniaques (exaltation de l’humeur, agitation) et des épisodes dépressifs. Toutefois, certaines personnes souffrant de troubles bipolaires ne connaissent pas d’épisodes dépressifs. Il existe donc plusieurs formes de troubles bipolaires. Comment le diagnostic est-il posé ? Quelles sont les prises en charge possibles ? En quoi la stigmatisation peut-elle entrainer un retard de diagnostic ?   Les troubles bipolaires sont une maladie psychique chronique, caractérisée par une alternance d’épisodes dépressifs et de phases d’exaltation maniaque. Ils touchent entre 2 et 3% de la population mondiale et restent encore difficiles à diagnostiquer, entraînant souvent une longue errance médicale, estimée à plusieurs années en France. Un diagnostic encore tardif Identifier les troubles bipolaires est un enjeu majeur, tant les symptômes peuvent être confondus avec d’autres pathologies. Ce retard de diagnostic complique la prise en charge et peut aggraver la maladie. Pourtant, des traitements et un accompagnement adaptés existent aujourd’hui pour stabiliser les patients et améliorer leur qualité de vie. Stigmatisation et rôle de l’entourage Au-delà des aspects médicaux, les personnes concernées doivent faire face à une forte stigmatisation et à des difficultés dans leur vie quotidienne. L’entourage joue alors un rôle essentiel, à la fois dans la détection des premiers signes et dans l’accompagnement sur le long terme. Avec :  Pr Chantal Henry, professeur de Psychiatrie à l’Université de Paris, psychiatre au Centre hospitalier de Sainte-Anne, et présidente du Conseil scientifique de la fondation Deniker Dr Racine de Pascal Viou, médecin pédopsychiatre. Praticien hospitalier à la Clinique universitaire de santé mentale (CUSM) au Centre National Hospitalier Universitaire Hubert Koutoukou Maga (CNHU-HKM) à Cotonou, au Bénin.  Un reportage de Raphaëlle Constant.
