Endotherms and Ectotherms

My AP Biology ThoughtsUnit 8 Episode #25Welcome to My AP Biology Thoughts podcast, my name is Helena and I am your host for episode #25 called Unit 8 Ecology: endotherms and ectotherms. Today we will be discussing the difference between endotherms and ectotherms. Segment 1: Introduction to endotherms and ectothermsEndotherms are organisms that use internally generated heat to maintain body temperature. They typically keep a steady body temperature regardless of their environment due a process called homeostasis. Homeostasis, which are mechanisms like shivering and sweating, keeps an endotherm's internal temperature steady. On the other hand, Ectotherms are organisms that mainly depend on external heat sources in order to regulate their body temperature. Their body temperature fluctuates based on their surrounding environment’s temperature. Their regulation methods include seeking sun when they need heat and shade when they need to cool down. Unlike endotherms, they are able to survive off of a range of body temperatures instead of needing to maintain a set temperature. Since ectotherms use outside sources for heat, they are able to eat much less food than endotherms. Ectotherms have a much lower metabolic rate than endotherms because they use a lot less internal energy to regulate their body temperature. About 50% of ectotherms food energy is used for growth and reproduction, while endotherms use most of their food energy during metabolism to maintain their body temperature. This is why endotherms require 5 to 20 times more food than an ectotherm of the same size. Segment 2: Example of Endotherms and Ectotherms Weather with a t-shirt on, just like every endotherm, you would start shivering. That is unless you are some kind of superhero. On the other hand, if heat generation exceeds heat loss, regulating mechanisms will increase heat loss. So if you were in Florida during August with a winter coat on you would start perspiring, or if you were a very hot dog you would start panting. Now onto Ectotherms, these are the organisms known as “cold-blooded animals”. Ectotherms include most fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. When an ectotherm needs to increase its body temperature, it will seek out heat sources. For example, an alligator will bath in the sun, or a lizard will sit on hot pavement. On the other hand, when ectotherms need to cool off, they will seek out shade. For example, a lizard might go hang out under a shaded rock. However, some ectotherms regulate their body temperature by living in environments that have fairly constant conditions. These include a lot of marine invertebrates, who live in aquatic conditions that fluctuate very little, so they don’t have to seek out heat or cooling sources. Their body temperature matches that of the surrounding water. Segment 3: Digging Deeper Endotherms and Ectotherms. So after learning all of this about ectotherms and endotherms, you might be wondering why organisms need to regulate their body temperature? Well the simple answer is that they would die if they didn’t. When cells are as cold as water’s freezing point crystals will form inside of them, which will most likely cause the cells membrane to rupture. Today we will be discussing how diversity in an ecosystem can be measured mathematically on a scale from 0 to 1. Segment 1: Introduction to Simpson Diversity IndexThe Simpson Diversity Index measures the diversity in a habitat while taking into account the number of species present and the abundance of organisms in each species. There is a simple equation to this Index which will give you a number from 0 to 1 as your answer, 1 being infinite diversity, and 0 being no diversity at all. Segment 2: Examples of Simpson Diversity IndexThe Simpson Diversity Index is important because it can help measure how diversity changes in response to a natural event or human impact. For example, scientists could measure the diversity of a habitat before and after a forest fire, and analyze the Simpson Diversity index to understand how the diversity was affected by the fire. Biodiversity in a habitat is important because each species has a specific role, and a significant decrease in the number of species could have a detrimental effect on the habitat. Keystone species are especially important to a habitat because a majority of species rely and depend on them. If the keystone species gets wiped out, it is more than likely for the Simpson Diversity index to drastically decrease. Segment 3: Digging Deeper into Simpson Diversity IndexWhen natural selection results in adaptive radiation, the Simpson diversity index can change drastically. For example, Darwin’s Finches created 13 different species which is an increase in the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Another example is extinction. When a natural disaster causes the diversity index to decrease, many niches are left unoccupied, and the habitat can fall apart leading to extinction. This match was the best clay court player in Rafael Nadal vs the best player in the world at the time in Novak Djokovic. This match ended up being a total shootout as both players were going back and forth. Rafael Nadal managed to win this match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 9-7. 1: Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal 2008 Wimbledon Final. This match was the King of Clay courts vs the King of Grass courts in Roger Federer. You might think Roger Federer would be the clear winner because Wimbledon is on grass, but no, this match went down as one of the best matches of all time. Nadal won the first two sets. In the 4th set Nadal was up 5-2 and had multiple championship points. Federer held on though and ended up taking the 4th set. The 5th set was epic as both players taking the lead. Rafael Nadal pulled away with the win 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (6-8), (9-7) Danyal: 3: Novak Djokovic Vs. Rafael Nadal 2012 Australian Open Final. This match was probably one of the best hard court matches ever. A significant match in the Djokovic–Nadal rivalry, Djokovic defeated Nadal 5–7, 6–4, 6–2, 6–7, 7–5 to win the tournament. It was the longest major final match (by duration) in history, lasting 5 hours 53 minutes, overtaking the record previously set by the 1988 US Open final between Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl. 2: Rafael Nadal Vs. Chemistry Behind Advil

Chemistry ConnectionsEpisode #22 Welcome to Chemistry Connections, my name is Sofie Ragins and I’m here with Xavier Jimenez and we are your host for episode #22 called The Chemistry behind Advil Today we will be discussing the chemical process that occurs when consuming advil to relieve pain Segment 1: Introduction to AdvilAdvil temporarily relieves headaches, backaches, common colds, muscle aches, and other pain. Basically, Advil is a safe non-prescription pain reliever. This means that you or I can walk into a drug store and purchase Advil without a doctor's prescription In 2018 nearly 24 million people purchased advil. The one and only active ingredient that is what actually causes the pain relief, Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is part of a drug class called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and the name Ibuprofen is derived from isobutyl (ibu) propionic acid (pro) phenyl (fen) Advil is dissolved in the stomach and then is absorbed by the intestinal wall in order to reach the bloodstream Eventually it reaches the areas where the synthesis of the prostaglandin is found. Prostaglandin are the fatty acids which cause the pain found near the damaged tissue. Okay so we have covered the background but there are a lot of things that the biology does not cover so do you want to get into the Chemistry portion of this podcast Segment 2: The Chemistry Behind AdvilOf course, while I had just said ibuprofen is ‘dissolved’ in stomach acid, Ibuprofen is actually not soluble in stomach acid which we are gonna discuss as gastric acid. I’ll start with a little background on Ibuprofen: it is a non-polar weak acid with a pH around 4.4. Ibuprofen is most soluble with organic solvents like ethanol, methanol, aceton, and dichloromethane Well, the non polar ibuprofen is what actually causes it to not dissolve with gastric acid. This is because Polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents and visa versus with nonpolar solutes and solvents. Knowing this principle, and that Gastric Acid is very polar it clearly indicates the nonpolar Ibuprofen will not form a solution with the polar gastric acid, this means no ibuprofen will technically be ‘dissolved’ Not only is ibuprofen insoluble but its molecule also has a large carbon chain. This carbon chain will create a great bond strength which is fairly difficult to break. The significantly high bond strength is difficult to overcome and in order for the molecule to dissolve, the solvent-solvent bonds must be broken, and solvent-solute bonds need to form. Gastric acid is extremely acidic with a pH of 1-2 and any strong acid will pull apart the intramolecular forces bonding the molecule, which is why acid is so destructive.
