Maya Hawke on Portraying Flannery O’Connor in the Ethan Hawke-directed Wildcat

Maya Hawke on Portraying Flannery O’Connor in the Ethan Hawke-directed Wildcat

Maya Hawke links back up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Wildcat, her new film that serves both as a biopic about novelist Flannery O’Connor and as an interpretation of the writer's Southern Gothic prose. Listen to the new episode wherever you get your podcasts.
The Stranger Things star talks about how reading O’Connor in high school left a lasting impression on her, one that directly led to the creation of Wildcat. Hawke had passed along the writer's prayer journal to her father (Ethan Hawke), and after he also fell in love with the work, the two decided to adapt her story for the big screen.
Hawke goes on to reveal how she found the voice and rhythm of O’Connor, how the novelist's style has a connection to songwriting (Hawke's album Chaos Angel comes out May 31st), and whether or not the film industry is on the cusp of a new era for independent cinema.

Spike Feresten on the Absurd Comedy in Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted

Spike Feresten joins Kyle Meredith to talk about teaming up with Jerry Seinfeld for Unfrosted, the new Netflix comedy about the earth-shattering invention of the Pop-Tart. Set in the early '60s in the town of Battle Creek, Michigan, Unfrosted is the hilarious saga of Kellogg's and Post, sworn cereal rivals, as they race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. Listen to the new wherever you get your podcasts.
Feresten -- famous for writing Seinfeld episodes like "The Soup Nazi" and "The Muffin Tops," as well as his work on Space Ghost Coast to Coast -- explains how he linked back up with Seinfeld for the absurd idea. As he tells the story, he explains how even though the characters are based on real people, they adapted the characters to fit a Seinfeld-mold.

Shinedown’s Brent Smith on "A Symptom of Being Human," Olivia Rodrigo’s Rock Status & Their Next LP

Shinedown’s Brent Smith on "A Symptom of Being Human," Olivia Rodrigo’s Rock Status & Their Next LP

Shinedown’s Brent Smith joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the continued success of their 2022 album Planet Zero and its single “A Symptom of Being Human,” what to expect from the band's next record, and more. Listen to the new episode wherever you get your podcasts.
The frontman discusses why he thinks the band's music continues to resonate years after its initial release, attributing much of it to their raw authenticity. As he tells it, such authenticity is shown not only through hit singles like "A Symptom of Being Human," but through their fun music videos and overall aesthetic as well.
Rather than genre labels or fan expectations, Smith explains how the band's authentic intuition drives the direction of the band. To make his point, the singer invokes the crossover success of Olivia Rodrigo. It’s with that in mind that Smith previews their plans for Shinedown's next album, which he says will be less concept-driven and more guest-heavy.

Sarah Dowland on Sue Bird: In the Clutch, WNBA & Caitlin Clark’s Record-Breaking Season

Sarah Dowland joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her documentary, Sue Bird: In the Clutch. The documentarian, who is also behind the legendary visual effects for several Harry Potter and Matrix films, tells us why she wanted to tell the story of the basketball legend leading up to Bird’s retirement, why we look up to athletes, and the great coincidence of this doc coming out during Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking season and massive ratings for women’s basketball playoffs. Dowland also talks about the important stories told within the doc about the WNBA’s pay gap and looks back at when the players were encouraged to hide their sexuality, as well as the levity of seeing that Sue Bird and partner Megan Rapinoe keep their Olympic medals in shoeboxes in their closets.
