What happens when life finally starts going your way… and then everything changes? In Episode 2 of the Glen “Schultzy” Scholz story, we pick up where Episode 1 left off — a young country Victorian who had found direction, purpose and belonging in the Australian Army. After completing his Initial Employment Training, Schultzy arrives at 1st Armoured Regiment and begins his career as a tanker. This is where the kid who once had no idea what he wanted to do with his life starts becoming a leader. He talks about the soldiers and commanders who shaped him — tough leaders who demanded standards, expected accountability, but would also back their people when it mattered. Those lessons stayed with him. Schultzy worked to become the best he could be at his trade, progressed through the ranks and was recognised for his performance and leadership, including being awarded Crew Commander of the Year. There are plenty of good memories too. The mates. The tanks. The stupidity that comes with young soldiers. And somehow, Schultzy and I being let loose in Las Vegas — which probably deserves a podcast of its own. But eventually Schultzy made another major decision. He transferred from the Royal Australian Armoured Corps to the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) to become an electrician and start preparing himself for life beyond the Army. It was supposed to be the beginning of his next chapter. Instead, everything changed. Schultzy started feeling unwell. He thought he’d get better. He didn’t. Eventually came the words nobody expects to hear as a young, incredibly fit soldier: You’ve got cancer. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. And suddenly the fight had nothing to do with tanks, promotions, awards or the Army. It was a fight for his life. This is where Glen’s story becomes incredibly raw. The treatment. The uncertainty. The setbacks. And the mentality of a bloke who, even when life keeps hitting him, somehow continues to find something positive to hold onto. This episode isn’t about pretending adversity doesn’t hurt. It’s about what you choose to do when it does. Control what you can control. GLEN SCHOLZ — CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL | EPISODE 1 Some people talk about resilience. Glen “Schultzy” Scholz has lived it. He’s beaten cancer twice. He’s undergone two stem cell transplants. He served his country, including deploying to Afghanistan. He was told he may never have children — yet went on to build a family with his wife, Kylie. He rebuilt his body from almost nothing and became an Ironman, an Epic Legend, a national champion para mountain-bike rider and an elite endurance athlete. But before all of that, there was just a country kid from Traralgon trying to work out where he belonged. In Episode 1 of Control What You Can Control, we go right back to the beginning. Schultzy talks about growing up in country Victoria, becoming an elite junior badminton player, recording an incredible 16.9 beep test, losing his way during his teenage years and leaving school without any real direction. Then tragedy struck when his cousin — someone he looked at like an older brother — was killed in a car accident. It forced Schultzy to start asking a question that would eventually change his life: “What am I actually doing with my life?” Then his mum gave him a push. Defence recruiting came to town. Schultzy walked through the door knowing almost nothing about the Army. That decision changed everything. Episode 1 takes us through his enlistment, recruit training and the beginning of his journey into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps, finishing as he heads into his Initial Employment Training to become a tanker. What Schultzy didn’t know was that the lessons he was about to learn in the Australian Army would one day help him fight battles far greater than anything he could have imagined. Cancer. Twice. This is more than a story about survival. It’s about adversity, mateship, family, service, resilience and learning to control what you can control. This is the Glen Scholz story. We talk about what it meant to pull on the Australian jersey, Dave’s experiences representing his country, becoming captain, and eventually making the transition from player to Head Coach of the Australian Deaf Rugby team. Dave shares the challenges, the great memories, the mates he made along the way and what representing Australia means to someone whose journey started as a country kid playing rugby in Inverell. Across these three episodes, we’ve talked about much more than rugby. We’ve talked about family, loss, resilience, leadership, mateship, opportunity and giving back.
