Welcome back to the 120 Podcast – Kenya Series. In this special bonus episode, we’re joined by a guest who offers a unique perspective on the many different roles and opportunities available to paramedics in Kenya. Today, we’re joined by David Maxwell Migoti, a Kenyan paramedic, healthcare operations professional, clinical instructor and emergency preparedness practitioner, whose career spans frontline emergency care, ambulance and healthcare transport operations, quality improvement, risk management, disaster preparedness and emergency-care education. David currently serves as a Transport Coordinator at Avenue Healthcare Hospital in Kisumu and as a Clinical Instructor at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, MMUST. He is also a World Health Organisation Basic Emergency Care Provider and Instructor. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Paramedical Science, David has a particular interest in strengthening EMS systems across Africa through improved operations, quality and patient safety, education, research and digital health. In this episode, we explore David’s career journey, what it’s like to work across both clinical and educational roles, the challenges faced by paramedics in Kenya, the impact of technology on emergency care, access to continuing medical education, and where he believes the profession could go over the next five years. So, what does it really mean to be a modern paramedic in Kenya? And how can education, technology and innovation help shape the future of paramedicine? Welcome back to the 120 Podcast Kenya Series. In this episode, we welcome two special guests who bring different perspectives to an important conversation about the future of paramedicine in Kenya. We are joined by George Amolo, Co-Founder and Acting President of the Paramedic Association of Kenya (TPAK), an advocate and strong voice for the professional development, recognition and regulation of paramedicine in Kenya. George and the wider TPAK team, alongside international partners, have been involved in advocacy initiatives, including engagement with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and discussions surrounding the development of a proposed scope of practice for registered paramedics. This podcast miniseries obtained from the 120 compressions archive looks into empowering women in healthcare In this series of interviews, where we will speak accomplished women in various areas of healthcare. Women's roles in healthcare are diverse, making up the majority of the workforce, yet remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions with global leadership roles only around 25%, according to studies from 2025. In the U.S. healthcare industry, women are well-represented in entry-level for ARRT (75%) and senior manager roles (61%), but drop to 32% at the C-suite level. Whereas the percentage of women in the broader tech and medical device sectors varies, but recent data suggests they are underrepresented in leadership positions. Women's roles in healthcare are diverse, making up the majority of the workforce, yet remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions with global leadership roles only around 25%, according to studies from 2025. Women make up approximately 68% of physician associates (PAs) in the United States. This percentage has increased over time, transforming the profession from one that was historically male-dominated to one with a female majority. Women are increasingly in leadership roles within the Physician Associate (PA) profession, with a growing number taking on roles such as program directors, and contributing to academic and clinical leadership. However, they still face challenges like systemic barriers, implicit bias, and a lack of clear leadership pathways, though these issues are being addressed through initiatives and a greater focus on creating supportive environments. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) women constitute to the majority of veterinarians in the U.S., making up approximately 67% of the total workforce in 2023. Despite being the majority in the profession, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions within veterinary schools and organisations. Recent studies indicate that women veterinarians consistently earn less and advance more slowly than their male counterparts, though the field is working to address this. The growing proportion of women in veterinary school suggests this trend of feminization will continue to shape the profession's future. 120 Podcast focuses on speaking with healthcare professionals from around the world. Offering insights into how other healthcare services operate, global leadership, and diverse subjects. This podcast miniseries obtained from the 120 compressions archive looks into empowering women in healthcare. In this series of interviews, where we will speak accomplished women from various areas of healthcare. In 2024 a study on gender disparities showed that women make up approximately 33% of emergency physicians across 10 countries with the percentage varying significantly by nation, and rising from the residency level to attending physician roles in the US. While roughly half of all US medical graduates are women, the percentage decreases with seniority in the emergency medicine (EM) field, with women making up only about 27-28% of EM attending physicians and 16% of EM department chairs. The second episode kicks off with the founder of 120 Compressions Eric Cantor who is an active Paramedic, and instructor and has been working as an EMS provider for over 15 years speaking Dr. Lisa Rabinowitz who is an emergency medicine physician in Anchorage, Alaska. She received her medical degree from University of Washington School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Empowering Women in Healthcare Series: Melodie Kolmetz

Melodie Kolmetz, MPAS, PA-C, EMT-P, CP-C, is a physician assistant and paramedic in the Rochester, New York area. She has been an EMS provider for over 30 years and a PA for over 25 years. She attended the Rochester Institute of Technology PA program where she received her BS in Physician Assistant Studies, Monroe Community College where she received an AAS in Paramedicine, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she received a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies with a Concentration in Education. She is currently a doctoral student in the Curriculum, Instruction and Science of Learning Program at the University at Buffalo. She works as a physician assistant in geriatrics and occupational health and as adjunct faculty in Emergency Medical Services at Monroe Community College. She serves as a New York State Certified Instructor Coordinator and EMS Regional Faculty Member.
