Nepal recovering from impact of flash floods

More than 1,000 people have been confirmed dead after last week’s flash floods on the border of Nepal and Tibet, according to Nepal’s disaster agency. Almost 4,000 people are still missing. Rescuers are trying to reach hundreds of workers who have been trapped in a large network of tunnels at hydropower sites. Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on Monday that 279 people had been rescued from the sites. A key cause of the deadly floods is thought to be a glacier collapse in the Himalayas. A glacier is a large area of dense ice. Learn more about this story with Georgie and Phil. For more language-learning tips, head to bbclearningenglish.com. How do we describe smells?

What is the worst smell in the world? And what is the best smell? Are there any smells that you like, but that your friends or family hate? Smells are all around us all the time, but the English language is often quite general in the way it describes smells, as opposed to other senses like sounds or tastes. But why is this? Neil and Georgie discuss this and teach you some new vocabulary. Free Lesson: Daily English 172 - Legal Problems

Learn how to talk about crime and the legal system in English. Jeff reads a newspaper story about a student arrested for burglary and assault. Dialogue/Story I was reading the newspaper this morning and saw a story about a university student arrested and charged with burglary and assault. Last Monday, this student hit a security guard over the head, broke into his professor's office and stole the professor's computer. He wasn't doing well in the class and thought that he could steal the exam. When he was arraigned in court, the prosecutor said that the charges were very serious felonies, and not simple misdemeanors. He also said that because the student was a flight risk, the bail should be set at $2 million dollars. The judge agreed. If the student is found guilty of all the charges, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail. When I read this story, I thought, wouldn't it have been easier for him to just study?

English: a flood; the swelling of a river until it overflows (the exact opposite of a drought) il gavettone — L'acqua contenuta in un secchio lanciata addosso a qualcuno per gioco, di solito d'estate e di solito per rinfrescarsi. Il secchio no: quello è pericoloso. English: a bucketful of water thrown over someone for fun (and please throw the water, not the bucket) Note dell'episodio È la prima puntata con Matteo di nuovo a Milano dopo tre mesi di lavoro da remoto in Inghilterra, e comincia dove finiscono tutte le puntate degli ultimi tre mesi: dal caldo. ...
