In 2021, the double homicides of Alex Murdaugh's son Paul Murdaugh and his wife Maggie Murdaugh launched this tangled web of crime and corruption into the international spotlight. While family patriarch Alex Murdaugh was convicted of Paul & Maggie’s murders in 2023, that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2026, and he awaits a new trial date to be scheduled as of June 2026. He remains in prison on state and federal financial crimes for which he pleaded guilty.
