Bonus Commentaries: Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg

With more details of the recordings of the two new series of Red Dwarf seemingly imminent, it seems like as good a time as any for a new edition of The Garbage Podcast. So, we should look at one of the high points of the show to celebrate the excitement we are all feeling, right? Right? Well no, frankly that’d be effort, so instead this edition of the podcast has our commentary for Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg. But as much as we joke about it, was it really that bad, or was it a quite enjoyable centrepiece to what is still the biggest celebration of the show on TV, Red Dwarf Night. I don’t know. Why are you asking me? We just recorded half an hour of commentary that (mostly) discussed that topic, so listen to that and I’ll get back to eating cereal in my underwear. What was the thinking behind the show? Was the rice manoeuvre pre-planned? And is Ansley Harriott truly an oily God as the Change.com campaign would have you believe? These kitchen lubricated topics and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at an look at an unusual oddity. P for Picard: ‘Broken Pieces’ and ‘Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1’

Rios finally meets Dahj and realises she looks exactly the same as Janna, an alien woman who was murdered by his former captain before he took his own life. Jurati wakes up and admits that she murdered Maddox and she agrees to hand herself in. but first they head for Soji’s home planet pursued by Narek. On the Borg cube, Seven arrives to save Elnor and decides to activate the sleeping collective to kill the Romulans, but that doesn’t work so it’s all a bit pointless but the former Borgs seem to eat Narissa and the rest of the Romulans bugger off to Soji;s planet where Picard and crew have already arrived. They meet a colony of friendly androids on a college campus in California led by Doctor Altan Inigo Soong, the son of Data’s creator – because Brent Spiner has to get paid and they didn’t have the budget to de-age him. It’s just like the Augments episodes of Enterprise …but worse. Could this apparently peaceful place actually be something more sinister? Well, yes because a Soji double is actually bad, you know like Lore… but worse. And we’re probably heading towards a big space battle in the finale but honestly who cares? First Contact: ‘Who Watches the Watchers’ Season 3 Episode 4

FIRST CONTACT: ‘WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS’ SEASON 3 EPISODE 4 In this week’s exciting Star Trek The Next Generation podcast: The Enterprise is on course to deliver some supplies to a remote outpost who are spying on a proto-vulcan settlement. Everything goes wrong though and there are explosions and some of the indigenous population witness the advanced technology and believe Picard to be a god potentially changing their entire belief system. Can Picard fix the potential damage done to this society by breaking the Prime Directive even more than they already have? Probably, and also Riker and Troi get to dress up so that’s nice. Andrew, Alex and James gather once more to ponder the Prime Directive and try not to get too distracted by horses in what could be the Star Trekkiest Star Trek episode of all time. First Contact: ‘The Ensigns of Command’ Season 3 Episode 2

FIRST CONTACT: ‘THE ENSIGNS OF COMMAND’ SEASON 3 EPISODE 2 The Sheliak Corporate gets in touch with the Enterprise and they never, ever call so the crew know that something’s up. They want some humans cleared off a planet, that’s belongs to them thanks to a hundred year old treaty. Turns out the humans are the descendants of some colonists who got lost 90 years earlier. Due to the radiation on the planet, only Data can go down and he’s charged with getting the colonists to leave, although they’re mostly reluctant. Meanwhile the Enterprise has to stop the Sheliak wiping out the crew. Both need to be creative to achieve their aims, and you know what, in the end they manage. Join Andrew, James and Alex for an episode that they actually enjoy for a change as they analyse every detail and wonder what the hell ‘The Ensigns of Command’ even means. FIRST CONTACT: ‘MÉNAGE À TROI’ SEASON 3 EPISODE 24 ‘Ménage à Troi’ sees the Enterprise arrive at Betazed for a trade conference, a landmark event with the Ferengi in attendance for the first time. Lwaxana Troi is invited giving her and Deanna a chance to catch up and fight about her lack of husband. Unfortunately all is not well as the Enterprise begins another dull mission. While Riker and Troi are enjoying some shore leave and a picnic with Lwaxana, the three are kidnapped by the Ferengi as Daimon Tog desires the Betazed ambassador to be his lover and partner in crime. After many uncomfortable scenes and some pillow talk, Riker sends out a signal to the Enterprise.
