#17 Fizyr: Applying Deep Learning for Vision Guided Robotics

Hello and welcome to Berlin Robotics Podcast number 17. Today I am talking to CEO Herbert ten Have from Fizyr.

Fizyr was a double winner of the Amazon Picking Challenge. This was a challenge to pick and stow a variety of products between a shelf and a bin. Besides the unstructured environment the main challenges are: 3D Vision, motion planning, grasping, task planning and robustness.

"We focus on solving the challenges of global leading machine factories and system integrators", Herbert says. "We often solve their first and primary question; can a deep learning algorithm be trained to cope with variation and robust enough to provide the required answers? We mostly start with a small and quick PoC (Proof of Concept) to provide those answers. Getting those results and seeing clients impressed and enthusiastic is always a great pleasure for our team in Delft."

#WirVsVirus & the hackathon approach to fight COVIT-19

#WirVsVirus & the hackathon approach to fight COVIT-19

This Berlin Robotics special features Nele Quast, a community member. She is going to talk about her experience throughout the 48h hackathon. Challenges identified by the German federal government and society.

Nele studied biomedical engineering at Imperial College, and decided to specialise in data science and computing. She came to Berlin to work on robotics related topics and accepted a phd in Human-Computer Interfaces at the MPI for intelligent systems, where she is going to start in July.

Nele read about contact tracing in the media and wondered how they were doing it. It occurred to her, as it occurred to many, that there are technical solutions for these problems these days. She had pretty much given up on working on it and was just waiting for someone else to release something, when a family member sent her a link to the #WirVsVirus Hackathon on linkedin.

She signed up, thinking she would post the idea, no one would respond or someone would take it on. Instead, it immediately started a conversation and within an hour a team had formed. By the next morning (Saturday) they had some idea on how to proceed, and that evening we had mockups and a code base.

The team was phenomenal and the network the enormous slack channel created were truly incredible. They had conversations and were advised by epidemiologists, stack engineers, native developers, crypto experts and marketing and corporate whizzes.

After submission it wasn’t clear how the project would continue. The team was quite keen but didn’t know what the framework would be. They were also aware that at least 5 other teams had been working on similar protocolls.

They didn’t have to wait long: On Monday around midday they were asked to join a collab…

Special: How StreamML Wants To Combat Covid-19

Special: How StreamML Wants To Combat Covid-19

This is Michel Herszak with Berlin Robotics, and today’s episode is more of a personal mission and less about automation in Berlin. Today’s Podcast is about a company from Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton is a city within the province of Alberta. You may have heard about it if you are in oil and gas, or Maschine Learning. For instance, Rich Sutton, one of the founding fathers of Reinforcement Learning, calls Edmonton his home. He is a distinguished research scientist at DeepMind and a professor of computing science at the University of Alberta.

Richard Sutton inspires companies, scientists, developers and students from all around the globe to follow in his footsteps. One of those companies is StreamML. I am in touch with the founder John Murphy since 2012 and have seen what they accomplished since then.

John Murphy who is a serial entrepreneur wants to help combat CT-19 with StreamML. I agreed to this BR-special for one reason, I don’t have the necessary knowledge to fight CT-19 myself but I want to help and connect him with German speaking authorities.

#14 Warum investiert Project A in die Industrie 4.0

#14 Warum investiert Project A in die Industrie 4.0

Herzlich willkommen zum 14. Berlin Robotics Podcast. Ja was für Zeiten #stayHome.

    Viel Spass!
