Nancy Jackson

This is a podcast that features the voices and stories of notable Colorado elders. We started this podcast because after years of working in politics and in various communities, we have met many amazing people across the state that have accomplished important things. We think they should be recognized, and that you would be interested in their stories.

    Episode 3: Wayne Gilbert

Wayne Gilbert is a man of many talents- he’s a teacher, poet, dancer, actor and the kind of man that brings wisdom and compassion wherever he goes. After studying for the ministry, and deciding to take another path, Wayne taught at the Community College of Aurora for 37 years where he was an instrumental part of a department teaching teachers to be more effective in the classroom.  This group inspired decades of teachers to strive for excellence in teaching.  At the same time he also performed in local theater and volunteered with a hospice organization. In 2005, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Since retirement he writes and performs poems about his experience to advocate and support others with the diagnosis. His three books of poems, “magmamystic” “From the Ashes” and “Sacred Chill” represent only a small part of his poetry. Wayne has facilitated poetry workshops for Parkinson support groups, as well as within the Sterling Correctional facility.  He also performs his poetry to much acclaim, often appearing with jazz musicians. He would like to give his warm appreciation to The Institute for Poetic Medicine https://www.poeticmedicine.org/  Where you can find more about Wayne, and read many of his poems which are posted there,  or The Davis Phinney Foundation https://davisphinneyfoundation.org/ which is another site that has been supportive of Wayne’s work, and where you can find more of his poetry.   Contact us for comments, questions, and suggestions for future episodes at Dr.nann@gmail.com   Credits: Interviewers: Nancy Jackson and Carolyn Boller Sound by Dan Jackson
