Chaplin is also a major shorebird stopover point. The Chaplin Lake area is a designated Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network site. Whether you look for commercial services or community services, you will find both are well-established in Weyburn. Over 10,500 residents call Weyburn their home. Weyburn’s intermediate trading area services 50,000 people from nearby communities, villages and towns. Our main economic base is comprised of agricultural service and shipping, oilfield exploration, manufacturing and processing, and business and industry services. Weyburn’s rich soils have made for excellent grain farming in the area, helping make Weyburn the country’s highest volume inland grain handling centre. On March 1, 1993, the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake officially changed its status and name to the Town of Chestermere.In 2014, with a population of 17,203 and expectations of continued growth, Chestermere’s Council undertook consultation with residents to determine whether or not to change the community’s name to ‘city’. On September 29, 2014 Council decided to apply for city status. On January 1, 2015, the community officially became the City of Chestermere.As it is now, Chestermere is a dynamic junction of economic and social activity, a city achieving a vision as a successful standout Alberta destination.
