    Vivian Peerbooms and the predictors of Treatment Failure

    In this first episode of Behind the Paper - Clinical Psychology in Europe, Vivian Peerbooms is in conversation with Early Career Researchers Joost Gülpen and Larisa Dinu about the recently published CPE article: “A Scoping Review of Amenable Patient-Specific Predictors of Treatment Failure in the Treatment of Anxiety and Depressive Disorders.” The discussion explores the "reversed question" in psychotherapy research: rather than asking why treatment works, Vivian examines why it sometimes fails for a substantial group of patients. The conversation highlights the clinical importance of amenable predictors, factors such as treatment expectancy and social support, that clinicians can potentially influence before therapy begins to create a better outcome perspective. Vivian also discusses the influence that a lack of consensus on defining treatment failure has on the field and shares a powerful call to action for clinicians to be careful about using factors like perceived low motivation to exclude patients from treatment.
