    Fast X (Lap 16)

    We’re heading to another cliffhanger as we talk about Fast X with Dr. Dan Hassler-Forest, author of Fast and Furious Franchising: How the Serialized Blockbuster Remade Hollywood! Joey starts things out by asking a tough question: does Dan like these movies? After getting confirmation (yes, yes he does), Dan explains how he could like them even more, why he wrote his book, and what he wanted to explore with the franchise. We talk about how Hollywood has changed — and how Fast & Furious is a reflection of that — who Dan wrote this book for, and what Dan left out that will “haunt him to [his] grave.” Joey talks about ideas for future laps (based on the book), we break down petromasculinity and automancers, and we talk about Dan’s academic analysis of Spy Racers (and what Netflix was trying to do with the series). Then, Dan talks about what he doesn’t like about Fast X and what he’d do if he was in charge of Fast Forever before he takes the character quiz.     I am still crying... | Life in the Fast Lane #76

    It’s time for an installment of Life in the Fast Lane that is jam-packed with news about the Fastiverse, and I am still crying… well, I guess we are. Anyway, we kick off with the Tokyo Drift Minute (#41), which features our first real conversation between Sean and Neela. Then, we start Running the VIN, where Vin Diesel “officially confirms” a new project he’s working on and is “underwhelmingly normal” in one post. We also get to the really big (non-) news via his Instagram and related interviews: is there a tearjerker of a Fast Forever script? Is Louis Leterrier directing the film? Is Alan Ritchson in it? No one seems to know! We briefly discuss Sung Kang’s upcoming film DRIFTER (you can watch the trailer here) and ask whether or not Vin Diesel could tell the end of the franchise’s story without the help of Universal Pictures.     Freeway (1996)

    Austin Wolf-Sothern returns to the show after a (very) long absence to talk about Freeway starring Reese Witherspoon! After reminding us of the role he played in establishing one of the main bits of our podcast lore, we talk about his (very apt!) first viewing of this movie. We run through director Matthew Bright's fascinating filmography, discuss the Little Red Riding Hood framework, and try to make sense of the bizarre order of the credits in this movie. We heap praise on Reese Witherspoon (and her star turn in this movie), admire the love and empathy that Matthew Bright has for his characters, and talk about how ahead of its time Freeway was (in many ways). Austin praises Brittany Murphy. We talk about the reveal of the final scene at grandmother's house -- and how different it is in the original (and Vinegar Syndrome-restored) version.     Who taught ya how to love, baby? | Life in the Fast Lane #75

    It's time for Life in the Fast Lane, and we've got a big Kojak-inspired question: Who taught ya how to love, baby? We begin with a Tokyo Drift Minute wherein DK enrages Joe for hitting a little too close to home, and we receive a question for Minute 15. Then: we have thirteen (!) VINs to run, and he’s "hiding in plain sight." Joe continues down his rabbit hole of belief that Vin is listening to us, Joey wonders what's up with all the Russian comments, and Vin posts a video that’s nearly six minutes long. Jackie writes in to ask: Is Vin opportunistic based on his baldness? Also: could we have a bald man Royal Rumble for the rights to Kojak? Joey begs Joe to get offline. Joe goes to play shuffleboard and Joey has an all-time bad theater experience. We talk about The Odyssey and The Invite and Toy Story 5. Joe once again fails to ruin Disclosure Day for Joey.     "Fan favorite" Garrett Smith returns to the podcast to talk about F9 and to answer a question: is "fan favorite" akin to a title belt that we can take away? After we get his updated rankings and his screentime guess for The Rock in Fast Forever, Joe comes up with a new thing to track for our next lap. We talk about how Gisele's return cheapens Han's arc in F9, whether the extended cuts in Fast & Furious movies are actually worth watching, and the level of action and drama in this movie that feels incredibly heightened (especially when compared to the really grounded -- and really impressive -- practical driving in F9). We share what we love about Jakob and John Cena's performance in this movie, break down the very basic lessons learned in the latter Fast movies, and wonder how we go from outer space to basic, for Fast Forever, or if going to space in this movie was actually... kind of mild? We lament the sad state of turning popular films into TV series, discuss Roman's (literal) big swing, and revisit the Star Wars references through a new lens.     "You don't plan a life that rhymes like that." | Life in the Fast Lane #74

    It’s time for another Life in the Fast Lane, and we’re here to share a piece of advice: “You don’t plan a life that rhymes like that.” We enter the backrooms in the Tokyo Drift Minute (#39) to find some Initial D connections, and to wonder what Japanese words Sean has picked up so far as well as what he thinks Morimoto says. We then Run the VIN, which features a couple of very long posts. (Classic Vin.) Joe asks: how would we spend a day as Vin’s Kojak videographer? Joey raises a new goal of media literacy for this segment: to ensure no one else is further duped by Vin Diesel suggesting that Fast Forever is definitely in production, and it’s definitely not a World Cup promo. (Alas.) The Rock continues his quest for an Oscar win with a potentially questionable decision. Jason writes in to dive in deeper into the Bear Paw minute, as well as to share some stats about various F&F rankings. (Rotten Tomatoes is wild!) We talk about the big moves made at Joey’s BBQ re: our Fast Forever prize before discussing new release movies (Leviticus, Jackass: Best and Last, and Supergirl).     We're headed to the surreal post-apocalyptic (?) wasteland of Motorama, and Joey has assembled his co-host Avengers, Mike Manzi and Bob (aka Shreds), for help! After Bob talks about how he discovered this movie -- and the (maybe) genius behind it -- we talk about who the movie is for (unclear) and what it's trying to say about the American Dream (also unclear). We discuss its Twin Peaks vibes and dream logic, its long list of cameos and character actors, and our favorite scenes and moments. Mike connects this movie with a legendary Nicolas Cage movie. We discuss modern equivalents of Motorama cards.     "because tonight, I am six years old again." | Life in the Fast Lane #73

    It’s time for Life in the Fast Lane and a trip down memory lane, “because tonight, I am six years old again.” (We all are, in a sense.) We begin with a Tokyo Drift Minute in transition (where are we?) wherein Joe explains the rules (and the “rules”) of pachinko, we discuss a pop culture reference that still holds up today (and which leads to a trivia question), and we take a trip down nostalgia lane. Plus, we read emails featuring question suggestions for Minute 37. We then Run the VIN, where he (naturally) takes pride and ownership in the Knicks’ win. Then, in trailer talk, we guess the release date for the first Fast Forever trailer and watch the trailer for the re-release. The Rock talks about politics… sort of. Jackie writes in to talk about the age of the Furious and to make a pitch for a Fast TV series. (By the way, the answer to the Community x Fast trivia question is Brie Larson.) Joe recaps a bunch of horror he’s watched recently and is shocked by how much Joey loved Disclosure Day. We talk about restaurants.
