HTGAWM Season 1 Final Thoughts (w/ Katie Findlay)

Katie Findlay is back for Part 2 of the Season 1 finale, where the conversation moves beyond Rebecca's shocking exit and into what it was actually like filming those final episodes. Katie reflects on rewatching her performance years later, seeing a young actor processing the loss of a character and creative family in real time, while Jack and Matt share their own memories of the uncertainty, anxiety, and emotional highs and lows that came with making network television. Along the way, they revisit fan theories, debate what they can (and definitely can't) remember about Season 2, and uncover how much of Rebecca's story was influenced by what was happening behind the scenes.  After saying goodbye to Katie, Jack and Matt take a moment to reflect on the journey of revisiting Season 1 together for the podcast. They share what it was like for Jack to watch the show for the first time, how their memories resurfaced through the process, and why the experience gave them a newfound appreciation for the cast, the fans, and the cultural moment that How to Get Away With Murder created.   That's officially a wrap on Season 1 of the How We Got Away With Murder podcast! THANK YOU to everyone who joined in on this journey through Season 1 of How to Get Away With Murder. 115: It’s All My Fault (w/ Katie Findlay)

Katie Findlay is back, jet lagged from Italy and still saying ciao like they never left, to help recap the Season 1 finale, and it's a banger. Loyalties get tested, paranoia peaks, and the truth behind Lila's murder is finally revealed (at least to the audience). Annalise puts Rebecca on trial and then comforts Wes with a creepy chant, and through it all, we still have no idea what “Eggs 911” could possibly mean. The Lila flashbacks appear in full force: Lila dangling her feet off a roof, Griffin's confusing relationship to celibacy, and the moment the killer decides Lila is going to die.   Katie reflects on rewatching a Rebecca they barely recognize anymore, crying through their final scene with Alfie knowing it was the last one they'd film, and the "white queer reckoning" moment that came with watching the show back. We get to see Asher and Bonnie in bed with incredible lighting, Michaela holding her own in a tense scene with Aiden's mom, and find out why both Katie and Rebecca ride for Bonnie Winterbottom. The episode ends with a gut punch that had Matt in tears. Plus, Jack's panic after texting the wrong Billy about the show, why his League of Legends gamer tag was "Kill Connor," a Reddit theory about three versions of Lila's death getting debunked, a full look back at Season 1, and the question everyone keeps asking...could the show ever come back?  This is part one of a two-part finale; go listen to part two to hear our final thoughts on Season 1 of How To Get Away with Murder! 114: The Night Lila Died

Nine Tony nominations for Death of a Salesman, Matt caught Purity Ring in Florida, and the season one finale is officially only one episode away! Episode 14 is, by their own assessment... tense: a priest who won't break the sacrament of confession to save himself, Rebecca duct taped to a chair, and Nate getting jumped in his cell. A lot.  Wes and Laurel visit Rudi at the psych ward and the Rudi/Rebecca plotline starts clicking into place with a ton of heavy lifting from Alfie that pays off beautifully. The flashbacks fill in the gaps on Lila, Rebecca, and the frat house, including some PCP which is totally normal. Meanwhile Annalise tells the priest no god should forgive her and she won't confess to her sins, and Connor gets his HIV results back with Asher waiting in the wings for the fist bump. Matt and Jack get into Jack's semi-controversial take that Annalise is not actually a good lawyer, the Reddit HTGAWM x Scooby Doo crossover (Asher was Scooby, obviously), the church murder scene that looks like a video game, and whether Annalise would even care about Bon Bon and Douche Face getting their flirt on. Plus, Matt might have an Irish dance coming up on the show. Stay tuned for that. We want to hear from you! 113: Mama's Here Now

Jack is on a day off from Death of a Salesman, Matt is out of New York, and the mystery of how Tom Verica fell down those stairs in the midseason finale remains officially unsolved... harness theory is on the table, stunt man theory is also on the table, Tom himself doesn't remember. We'll never know. What we do know: the finale is close, and Episode 13 just raised the stakes considerably.  Nate gets arrested, Annalise takes to her bed, and Cicely Tyson arrives as Ophelia in full mama bear mode, announcing herself with one of the most epic lines of the season. Bonnie steps up to run a high-stakes assault case involving a nurse accused of raping her patient, makes a slip in court that could tank everything, and still pulls it off. Meanwhile, Annalise gets some real backstory, there's a devastating monologue fr om Ophelia about childhood sexual abuse and a house fire that in part earned Cicely five Emmy nominations for guest starring, sugar glass gets thrown, and Rebecca is tracking Wes. Matt and Jack get into the bumps, Asher's running commentary being highly inappropriate as always, Conrad showing up for roughly 48 hours to film all of Oliver's scenes, both hosts losing their fake IDs in their youth, and the Nate and Annalise relationship needing couples therapy immediately. Next episode: The Night Lila Died. Who said it?  We want to hear from you! 112: She's a Murderder

One host is sneezing through allergy season, the other just wrapped a family visit, and Sam's remains have been found in a landfill, so let's get into it. Annalise is clinging to her mob case for dear life, Hannah is on a mission, and Asher finally gets brought into the fold. Also, Matt is just now finding out that Bonnie is a lawyer. Just now.  On the podcast, Matt and Jack dig into the classroom becoming a masterclass in 5th amendment rights for the Keating 4, the great Connor and Asher energy this episode, the bumps (foliage in winter, murder discussed openly, Laurel using a burner phone out in the wild), and the behind the scenes of how the courtroom set works. Plus spit buckets and how eating scenes actually get filmed. They try to work out the case of the week IRL (lawyers, please chime in the comments), marvel at the Annalise incest line, and get into Viola cracking everyone up trying to say a character's last name on set. Until next week!  We want to hear from you! Liza Weil on Bonnie Winterbottom, Shondaland, and Babysteps

Matt and Jack welcome Liza Weil, known for West Wing, Gilmore Girls, Westworld, a million other things, and quite possibly the most Shondaland actor of all time, but best known to this audience as the one and only Bonnie Winterbottom. Liza opens up about coming to HTGAWM with a three-year-old at home and a serious case of imposter syndrome; she had no expectations about how well the show would do, didn't test for the role, and had to get on a plane within days of booking it. She talks about her long history with Shondaland and why she was afraid a lot of the time on HTGAWM, but okay once the cameras rolled. She also gets into how she originally auditioned for Rory on Gilmore Girls, the devastation of losing community when projects end, moving to NY and LA with no formal training and no backup plan, and how she's finally learning to get out of her own way. Plus, how something feeling bad and the end product being good are two entirely different things, and what Lunar Sway cracked open for her personally. One for the books! We want to hear from you! 111: Best Christmas Ever

Matt turned 40 this week and Jack's Broadway show is officially open, and somehow they still showed up to recap Episode 11. Priorities.  After the holiday break, Annalise resurfaces from a hotel drinking spiral and throws herself into a very intense case to avoid dealing with the Sam situation. The Keating 5 are getting grilled by police, Hannah is sniffing around and suspicious, and Annalise says the name of the show out loud in front of a classroom for the second time. A lot happening.  On the podcast, Matt and Jack get into the Scranton Strangler parallels, Katie Findlay's sweet smile and humor shining through, Connor's Christmas flashback and the emotional manipulation disguised as a cute boyfriend scene, the casually terrifying moment where Frank offers to kill Hannah like it's nothing, and the soap suds. You can’t forget the soap suds. Plus, Asher takes a moral stand, Aiden and Michaela's engagement implodes, and the episode ends on Rebecca watching the news as Sam's remains are found. Real gamechanger.   We want to hear from you! 110: Hello Raskolnikov

The show is back from hiatus and so is the chaos. Episode 10 picks up with the investigation into Sam's disappearance, the Keating 4 barely holding it together, and Annalise sitting down with detectives to answer questions about Night X... armor fully on, tell fully intact. Matt has done the analysis: she has a giveaway when she's lying, and there's a really big word for it. Meanwhile the Keating 4 are discussing the crime basically in front of law enforcement, Wes produces Sam's ring from the body, Rebecca goes goth again (and then non-goth), and Frank finds out Laurel committed a murder and genuinely could not care less.  On the podcast, Matt and Jack dig into the bad police work, the visual juxtapositions running through the episode, and the first real glimpse of Connor being supportive of Michaela. Jack correctly guessed Connor said the title line... anxiety memory from not being able to pronounce it at the table read. Plus, Annalise giving the Keating 4 an exam scenario that mirrors exactly what they did, and Marcia Gay Harden closing things out with a full mic drop.  We want to hear from you!
