It’s summer in Handel Creek and Hall Butcher has taken on a summer job at the brand new Starbright Mall. His boss never leaves her office, his coworker, the inimitable Jack Ratman, wears a Christmas sweater despite the heat, and that absolute snake Manifold Redding is working at the Yoghurt Store in the food court. As Hall insists on saying, it looks like it’s going to be the best Summer of his life.

It’s lunchtime at Starbright Mall and you know what that means! King of the Mall Randy O’Houlihan is going to drop some food court spaghetti onto the sweater of the ever-tormented Jack Ratman (not that he’ll notice). Will Hall save his new friend from further humiliation? Wait is the Mall Haunted? Is that what Chuck just said?

The bombastic owner of Starbright Mall, Burt Davis, has a problem. One: the Mall is flooded, two: people keep complaining about rats and there are NO rats at Starbright Mall, and three: the Adults Only section of Big Video has caused some complaints and it’s time for it to go. But a problem for Burt Davis is a rare opportunity for Hall Butcher. If only he could figure out how to get all that pornography back to Handel Creek.

Something is wrong at Starbright Mall. First, a disembodied voice swears revenge in the adults only section of a video store, and now something is crawling through the vents that has no earthly reason to be there. What’s more, Sarah Weybourne’s crush on Manifold Redding has revealed a complicated web of crushes that threaten to break everybody’s hearts.

What danger lurks beneath Starbright Mall? Whatever it is, it’s got Chuck Rivers is acting strange. He’s unresponsive, muttering madness under his breath, and attacking his friends. It’s up to Hall, Jack, and the rest of the Mall Gang to save their friend from whatever malady has taken him over before he’s gone forever.

It’s time to find out what’s happening to Starbright Mall. Hall, Jack, Des, Sarah, and Manifold, head to the locust haunted Throckmorton Library in search of solutions. However, every question answered seems to stir up even more mysteries and time is running out. One thing is clear though, the people of Handel Creek are in serious danger.
