    Why Do We Mourn?

The observance of the fast day of Tisha B’Av this week (July 23) will mark 1956 years since the destruction of the Holy Temple. The rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem is a Torah commandment, and anticipated by every prophet of Israel. But what relevance does the distant memory of the Holy Temple have for us today? Should we be mourning the past, or preparing for the future? Tisha B’Av means different things to different people…what does it mean to you? In this week’s episode of the Jerusalem Lights podcast, our hosts discuss the significance of the Holy Temple for all mankind, the promise of hope that it brings to humanity, and the big question...how is it going to be rebuilt? Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman share an inspiring, exciting perspective of Tisha B'Av and Holy Temple consciousness. The Torah of Moshe

The Book of Deuteronomy is called 'Devarim' in Hebrew, literally 'words.' This week's parashat Devarim begins the farewell address of Moses to his beloved people of Israel, 5 weeks before he passes from this world. This fifth book of Torah is uniquely different from the others...it is emanating from Moshe himself. The man who had previously self-identified as 'heavy of tongue' and unable to speak, suddenly begins to deliver the most beautiful oration. He proves himself to be a master of words! How did this transformation take place? In this week's edition of the Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman ponder Moses' unique relationship with the people of Israel, as reflected in the amazing book of Devarim. _________Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Follow Rabbi Richman on Substack: https://substack.com/@chaimrichmanJoin our new WhatsApp channel! https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbDN...Rabbi Chaim Richman's 'Jerusalem Lights', a non-profit educational organization, shares the wisdom of Torah teachings with all sincere spiritual seekers, emphasizing the ennoblement of the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the nurturing and development of each individual’s personal faith and relationship with the Creator. Speech is Divine

Parashat Matot, the first of this week's double Torah portions of Matot-Masei, (beginning in Numbers 30), opens with the subject of oaths and vows. Man’s ability to speak is a true reflection of the Divine image in which he is created, and his words have the power to create-- as well as to destroy. If he uses his words wisely, he can truly emulate God and bring blessing to the world. This week's Jerusalem Lights podcast finds our hosts in deep reflection on man's unique power of speech, and his great responsibility to use it wisely. Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman share powerful Torah insights on these last two portions of the Book of Numbers._________Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Follow Rabbi Richman on Substack: https://substack.com/@chaimrichmanJoin our new WhatsApp channel! https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbDN...Rabbi Chaim Richman's 'Jerusalem Lights', a non-profit educational organization, shares the wisdom of Torah teachings with all sincere spiritual seekers, emphasizing the ennoblement of the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the nurturing and development of each individual’s personal faith and relationship with the Creator. Pinchas, Leader for a New Generation

In the Torah portion of Pinchas (Num. 25:10), Pinchas, grandson of the High Priest Aaron, 'zealously avenged God's vengeance' and received both a covenant of peace, and a covenant of eternal priesthood. Who was this man? What empowered his deed, and what is the nature of this special status he was given? In this week's Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman consider these questions...as well as the famed teaching that Pinchas and Elijah the Prophet, who lives eternally, are one and the same person. How did Pinchas become 'Eliyahu HaNavi,' the harbinger of the messiah's arrival? _________Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Join our new WhatsApp channel! https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbDN...Rabbi Chaim Richman's 'Jerusalem Lights', a non-profit educational organization, shares the wisdom of Torah teachings with all sincere spiritual seekers, emphasizing the ennoblement of the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the nurturing and development of each individual’s personal faith and relationship with the Creator. Bilaam, Heathen Prophet of Anger

The Torah portion of Balak introduces us to the shadowy character of Bilaam, a heathen prophet who tried to manipulate G-d's will to suit his own agenda. He was an itinerant occultist who, way back then, sought to prove that Israel does not have the right to exist. In this week's Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman examine the mysterious prophet through a contemporary lens, and find that the modern scourge of anti-Semitism has much in common with Bilaam's twisted, baseless and ancient hatred. The Wisdom of Not Knowing

In this era of AI, humans are inundated with information, and the answer to any question is just a click away. But yet the Torah portion of Chukat, with its inscrutable ordinance of the Red Heifer, conveys a different message: There are mysteries in this world; sacred secrets that we will never understand. Indeed, the secret of the Red Heifer seems to stand in diametric opposition to the very essence of AI…two concepts that are as far apart as is the very difference between 'information,' and true 'knowledge'. In this week's episode of the Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman reflect on the mystery of the Red Heifer, on the connection between knowledge and the heart, and on template of true leadership. Parashat Shelach: The Unforgivable Sin of Slandering the Land of Israel

Everything begins to unravel for the Generation of the Desert in the Torah portion of Shelach. The debacle of the sin of the spies leaves its mark on the nation for generations to come, leading to the tragedies of Tisha B'Av and changing history forever. In this week's edition of the Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman ask some hard questions about this epic trauma, in the context of historical amnesia and the psychology of fear and vulnerability. And the most important question of all: How do we rectify the sin of the spies against the Land of Israel?_________Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Join our new WhatsApp channel! https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbDN...Rabbi Chaim Richman's 'Jerusalem Lights', a non-profit educational organization, shares the wisdom of Torah teachings with all sincere spiritual seekers, emphasizing the ennoblement of the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the nurturing and development of each individual’s personal faith and relationship with the Creator. Parashat Behalotcha 5786 | The Illusion of Desire

The Torah portion of Behalotcha presents a 'slice of life' of the Children of Israel in the Wilderness. It opens with the inspiring scene of Aaron lighting the flames of the golden menorah at G-d's command, literally 'be'halotcha,' causing the lights to rise straight up. In this week's Jerusalem Lights podcast, Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman share their thoughts on lessons learned from some of the portion's diverse themes: the sounding of the silver trumpets, the journeying forth of the Ark of the Covenant, the complainers, and the inscrutable prophecy of Eldad and Meidad, who foresaw the epic end-time battle of Gog and Magog, the final death throes of evil before the Final Redemption.
