Episode 2 – with Agnes Wagter (Seads) and François Devy (SEAQUAL Foundation): From Waste to Worth – Innovation in Circular Product Design

In the second episode of KHULULA: Circular Voices, we explore circularity through the lens of footwear, marine plastic, and material innovation — and ask what happens when waste becomes the beginning of a new product story. Host Mareike Graepel speaks with Agnes Wagter, founder of SEADS, and François Devy from the SEAQUAL Foundation about how circular thinking can move from concept to collaboration. SEADS is rethinking the espadrille through a circular lens, considering materials, product design, return systems, sorting, separation, recycling, and repurposing at the end of a shoe’s life. SEAQUAL connects marine litter clean-ups with recycling, material development, and brand applications, transforming marine plastic into SEAQUAL® Marine Plastic, then into polymer, yarn, fiber, textiles, and new products. Together, SEADS and SEAQUAL offer a concrete example of how circular product design depends not only on innovative materials, but also on shared responsibility, transparency, infrastructure, and business models that make regenerative systems possible. From marine litter to wearable design, this conversation explores the opportunities and challenges of turning waste into worth — and building systems where materials are kept in use for longer... and economical decisions who can change our planet's future for the better.
