OPC is the interoperability standard for the secure and reliable exchange of data in the industrial automation space and in other industries. It is platform independent and ensures the seamless flow of information among devices from multiple vendors. The OPC Foundation is responsible for the development and maintenance of this standard.
The podcast gives insight into the technology, applications in different industries and answers questions from the audience.
Your podcast host is Peter Seeberg. Peter has been involved in making OPC technology known to the world for the last 10 years.
The past and the future of OPC UA
Jim Luth, System Architect with Schneider Electric, and CTO of the OPC Foundation, talks about role as OPC Foundation CTO, about OPC UA revisions and versions, about MQTT, Big Data, and where he sees OPC UA to become adopted.
Getting OPC UA products certified
Alexander Allmendinger from the OPC Foundation talks about the certification process, the preparation, how to reach compliance, the actual testing, what is being tested, how to get started, and the tools available to support you in this process, plus what happens if during testing any issues are found.
Connect for Manufacturing App
Mithun Katti and Joerg Wende from IBM talk about IBM Industry 4.0 solutions, their Plant Service Bus, and the role OPC-UA plays in the IBM reference architecture for manufacturing, specifically the Connect for Manufacturing App.
Paul Hunkar from OPC Foundation explains, why certification is important, he talks about end-user and vendor demand for certification, about the cost involved, and about who can get products certified and how.
Max Walter from Siemens, in his role as the chairperson of the Joint Working Safety OPC & PI, gives a quick introduction into functional safety, he explains, how OPC UA deals with safety, he gives some example use cases, talks about key features, prerequisites, certification, and how OPC UA Safety will become the one and only safety protocol.
Field Level Communications
Peter Lutz, Director Field Level Communications from the OPC Foundation, provides background information about the FLC initiative, he talks about goals, parties involved, committees, working groups and he shares relevant use cases, specifically extending those OPC UA has been covering so far.
Field Level communication
Great discussions about technology, deep dive for engineers - thx to the Host Mr. Seeberg
Communication in industry
Good overview of the technology, I am looking forward to the next consequences
Good start, with room for improvement
The idea itself, offering an OPC UA technology podcast, is great! And I really liked the first episodes, giving a rough overview of what it basically is. For the future, I'd like to get more specific info on certain implementation topics, like best practices for browsing servers, details on subscriptions, handling certificates and so on. There's so much to tell and I'll be waiting impatiently. :-)
