    How PG&E Became Too Big to Fix

    A worn hook on a transmission tower. A hundred years of deferred maintenance. Eighty-five lives lost in the Camp Fire. In this episode, I take a deep dive into PG&E, the poster child for what happens when a monopoly utility becomes too big to fail and too dangerous to trust. I trace the pattern from the Hinkley groundwater contamination case (yes, the one from the Erin Brockovich movie) through the 2018 Camp Fire, through two bankruptcies, and into the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, a $5.7 billion cost overrun that became a permanent excuse to keep collecting ratepayer money. What emerges isn't a story about one bad company. It's a story about a regulatory model that rewards rebuilding over prevention, socializes risk while privatizing profit, and lets executives walk away from catastrophic failures with their compensation intact.
