Who gets to compete? Since the beginning of women’s sports, there has been a struggle over who qualifies for the women’s category. Tested follows the unfolding story of elite female runners who have been told they can no longer race as women, because of their biology. As the Olympics approach, they face hard choices: take drugs to lower their natural testosterone levels, give up their sport entirely, or fight. To understand how we got here, Host Rose Eveleth (they/them) traces the surprising, 100-year history of sex testing.

Simply fantastic

What a great show highlighting a historical - and again current - chapter of sports and the fight against all women*.
Disappointing

I was really excited to have found this podcast as I’m very interested in (gender) equality and sports. Unfortunately this podcast is just another perfect example of American identity politics. It’s great to talk about how difficult these policies are for DSD athletes and the history of gender inequality in professional sports. I learned a lot in those parts. But not even mentioning the very real benefits of testosterone as a hormone and the fact that testosterone is one of the most popular doping substances exactly because of its benefits is just bizarre. The podcast makes everything about gender identity even if it is about performance: Again and again the podcast argues that DSD athletes wouldn’t be able to compete in the men’s category so therefore not letting them perform in the women’s category is wrong. That’s just mixing different topics for the sake of making an argument. The point is that more testosterone gives you a very real and substantial advantage. It’s horrible that people discuss the looks of DSD athletes. At the same time it’s also a fact that testosterone changes your voice and appearance. That’s why this is a super difficult and sensitive topic and the solutions aren’t simple, which I thought this podcast would address. But instead it’s just another American podcast seeing the world in black and white and selectively mentioning evidence to make their case. It’s like the writers expect everyone and all evidence to fall into one of two categories - good or bad. A really disappointing way to talk about such a complicated topic.
