  1. Pan-Galactic Hitchhiking with Steve Mills and Kevin Wood

Pan-Galactic Hitchhiking with Steve Mills and Kevin Wood

This week's show is an affectionate look at the works of Douglas Adams, and what his humorous writings have to teach us about life, the universe, and everything. Joining AP are returning guest and time traveler extraordinaire Steve Mills and Adams super-fan and UFO buff Kevin Wood. In conversation they first discuss their respective discoveries of Adams' work in different times and places and through various forms of media, from the original radio production of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to related books, movies, TV series, and even stage plays. The characters in the story are analyzed as well as the general philosophies inherent in Adams' uniquely funny prose. From depressed robots to exploding kiosks, the timeless spirit of absurdity that permeates HHGTTG is perhaps more relevant than ever, even as it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid panicking.  Also discussed are accounts of UFOs and their occupants, and how high strangeness seems to follow a similar logic to that which operates in Adams' books, leading to conjecture about his life and inspirations for his stories. Of course his work outside of HHGTTG comes up as well, such as his association with Monty Python, his stories for Doctor Who, and stories revolving around his holistic detective character Dirk Gently. The episode is a treat for any fans of Douglas Adams, and hopefully an encouragement to those unfamiliar with his books to give them a read- or a listen, or a watch, since his works were such a multimedia phenomenon! Grab a towel, stick out your thumb, and enjoy!

  2. Exposing New Age Grifts with Joseph L. Flatley

Exposing New Age Grifts with Joseph L. Flatley

This week, journalist Joseph L. Flatley joins AP to discuss his book New Age Grifter- an in-depth investigation of a little-known cult and its now deceased leader Gabriel of Urantia. Flatley's freelance journalistic efforts in speaking to and working with former members of the cult, operating as Global Community Communications Alliance, brought to light insights about the man and his UFO-centered religious movement that range from humorous to downright disturbing. His book, the culmination of these efforts, even becomes part of the story as the group and its leader attempted to prevent its release. The book is out in an updated edition now, following somewhat successful attempts to disrupt distribution for the original printing through Feral House Press. In conversation, Flatley talks about Gabriel's journey from being a struggling Pittsburgh musician to his discovery of The Urantia Book, and the channeling abilities he claimed to attain during his several personal reinventions. This leads to broader discussions about cults, the nature of belief, and the various forms of exploitation that occurred within GCCA and elsewhere. Perspectives from former members are considered, including those of Gabriel's daughter, revealing the extent of the grift and the human cost; the utopian cult was responsible for traumatic instances of child abuse and forced labor from all members, among other things. In his book and in the interview, Flatley treats the material fairly and soberly paints a portrait of a narcissistic failed musician who built his own private fiefdom- a cult which exists in plain sight but is still largely invisible.Follow Joseph L. 3. Analyzing Cinematic Ritual with Ulysses Black

Analyzing Cinematic Ritual with Ulysses Black

On this week's show, ritualist and artist Ulysses Black joins AP to discuss ritual magic as it is portrayed in movies, ranging from horror movies to documentaries to arthouse cinema. He has written a full book's worth of work on the subject, and in this episode he and AP discuss some of the movies he covered and how he went about dissecting them. Ulysses' background in both art and ritual magick give him a unique critical eye for details in narrative construction and particulars about ritual in its portrayal, leading to fascinating insights into how we assign meaning as either a viewer or participant in the cinematic experience. Drawing from a diverse range of films, he and AP cover a wide range of topics as conversation gets into broader concepts such as apophenia, ritual derangement, and pitfalls in the human meaning-making experience. Through selected films, Ulysses discusses how they illustrate our popular understanding of the esoteric and how ritual actually works. Among the films discussed are The Craft, A Dark Song, Eyes Wide Shut, The Devil and Father Amorth, and The Wicker Man- and along the way, a lot of other pop culture and magickal concepts are explored. There's plenty of humor as well, as they discuss Crowleyan metaphors and the celebration of cult cinema as ritualistic in itself. Ulysses is careful to define what constitutes ritual as distinct from routine, and the highly personalized nature of assigned meaning and value that goes into such distinctions. This conversation illustrates the hidden layers of our day-to-day lives as much as it does the symbolism of media, and gives the listener a lot to think about. Getting Aggressively Scandinavian with Rowdy Geirsson

This week's show is a fun one, as author and viking historian Rowdy Geirsson joins AP for a discussion about his humorous work in writing about Scandinavian history and Norse Mythology. His recent book, The Impudent Edda, is a unique version of familiar Norse tales translated by Rowdy "from the original Bostonian"- showcasing gods like Odin, Loki, and Freya within the distinctly modern realm of New England. Such writings (in the original Bostonian) have been featured as a regular column on McSweeney's Internet Tendency and elsewhere, and despite their obvious playfulness and humor offer insights into the cosmology of Yggdrasil and the social dynamics of otherworldly beings. In conversation, he and AP have a wicked fun time discussing these as told by the mysterious, and likely drunk, South Boston poet who brought them to light. Rowdy also discusses his history with the subject of vikings and Norse mythology, his fascination with 19th century claims about Leif Ericksson, and some of the New England locales from Boston to Maine which inspired his writings. This leads to further chat about the ways myths endure and can be adopted through works of fiction, but also as emblems for often problematic ideological groups. They also discuss the long-running social media collaboration that is Wyrd Wednesday, a weekly online event in which anyone can share folkloric tidbits on the theme presented by Rowdy and his co-organizers. All of that plus the origin of the Chahlie Cahd, Wattersonian physics, and more are included in this interview. Check out Rowdy's work at https://scandinavianaggression.com/

Exploring Wild Houdini History with John Cox

On this week's episode of The AP Strange Show, Houdini historian John Cox joins AP for an in-depth discussion about the legendary magician, escape artist, and arch debunker of Spiritualist phenomena, Harry Houdini. John's incredible breadth of knowledge about the larger-than-life figure stems from a childhood fascination, and has culminated in several books and appearances on TV shows such as The UnXplained with William Shatner. Throughout his career as a screenwriter, he has continued pursuing the life story of the man whose name has become synonymous with stage magic and escape artistry. In this conversation, he and AP discuss some of the lesser known history of Houdini in AP's hometown of Worcester, MA, including his last outdoor performance and the mystery surrounding the coffin he used during his "buried alive" performances. From there John talks about what got him into the rabbit hole of Houdini's life, the work he's done to attempt a balance between the legends and facts about the man, and the various projects he's worked on in preserving Houdini's legacy. They also discuss his complicated history with séances, the evolution of the handcuff and jail escapes, and conjecture about Houdini's alleged involvement in espionage. The conversation is a real deep dive into entertainment history, and John Cox is an unparalleled source of information and enthusiasm on the matter! 6. Living the Weird Life with John E. L. Tenney

Living the Weird Life with John E. L. Tenney

This week, the one-and-only John E. L. Tenney joins AP for a conversation about a wide range of weird subjects including witches, Bigfoots, frogs, comedians, and much more! As a longtime investigator of and lecturer in a variety of highly strange topics, Tenney brings a wealth of knowledge and presents it in a warm and funny way through his works and on his podcast, What's Up Weirdo. In this episode, he discusses his recent zine dedicated to Gundella the Green Witch, as well as other larger than life characters. From there the chat covers a lot of weird ground, as they discuss fictional media representations of high strangeness, the importance of humor in considering paranormal subjects, and baffling moments of sometimes useless psychic abilities. A central theme in the discussion is about how to live one's best weirdo life, and how these interests can connect people who otherwise might never have met. Whether this is as simple as wearing your weird interests on your sleeve or as extravagant as becoming your area's local cryptid, Tenney's words and thoughts provide a great foundation for considering the strange and unusual. Tenney was also one of the first guests on this very podcast, so if you missed it and enjoyed this one, go back and find that one as well!
