How a European bank aims to finance the transition to a more resilient economy

Euronext Sustainability Week wraps up Sept. 18, and in this special episode to end the week, the All Things Sustainable podcast is talking to Triodos Bank CEO Marcel Zuidam. Triodos is a Netherlands-based sustainable bank that co-founded the Global Alliance for Banking on Values. Marcel explains how GABV members are working to finance positive economic, social and environmental impact. And he outlines Triodos Bank's focus on financing five interlinked transition themes related to food systems, resources, energy, society and wellbeing. "For us, banking is not neutral. Every decision to lend or invest is also a decision about the economy that we want to support," Marcel says. Marcel took on the CEO role in 2025, shortly before Triodos listed on Euronext's Amsterdam exchange. Why resilience is the buzzword as Euronext Sustainability Week kicks off

Euronext Sustainability Week runs Sept. 14-18, and in this special episode kicking off the week, we're talking to Euronext Group Head of ESG and Sustainable Finance Camille Leca. Euronext operates stock exchanges that list more than 1,800 companies across eight European markets, where Camille points to clear market demand for sustainable finance products. Despite a backlash against ESG in some parts of the world, she says, "the commitment and the appetite from investors is still there." At the same time, Camille says the language the market uses is evolving. She describes the idea of a "new ESG" that encompasses "energy, security and geostrategies" to reflect how sustainability is embedded in the current business landscape. The title of Euronext Sustainability Week — 'Building resilience in a changing world' — speaks to this evolution. "There was a need for rebranding, and the recent geopolitical events made 'resilience' a very clear word for showing what the challenges and opportunities are," Camille tells us. War and decarbonization: Rewriting the UK and Europe's refining future

By most conventional metrics, the European refining sector is in rude health. The Middle East conflict has driven key fuel price benchmarks to unprecedented heights, and refiners are running flat out to plug supply gaps left by disruptions to key Gulf exporters. In this episode, host Eklavya Gupte speaks to Kelly Norways, senior editor at S&P Global Energy Platts, who explains why the current boom has so far failed to shift many refiners' thinking about the long-term competitiveness of Europe as a fuel production hub, and why that disconnect threatens both the region's energy security and its ambitions for investment in low-carbon technologies. They explore how governments across the continent are responding to a wave of refinery closures that predates the conflict, whether the crisis has genuinely changed the political calculus in the region, and what it would actually take to unlock the scale of capital spending the sector needs to survive and decarbonize. We also hear from Elizabeth de Jong, CEO of Fuels Industry UK, a trade association representing the country's downstream sector. She sets out the industry's case to be included in the UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, explains why record refining margins represent a temporary distortion rather than a structural fix, and warns that without a decisive government signal on carbon costs and competitiveness, Europe risks emerging from this crisis in a weaker position than when it began.

How a European renewable energy company is pursuing affordability amid geopolitical uncertainty

In today's episode, we talk with EnergyVision Founder and CEO Maarten Michielssens. EnergyVision is a Belgian renewable energy company listed on Euronext's Brussels exchange, and Maarten outlines the company's goal to make it easier for customers to transition to renewable energy. He describes a business model — producing renewable energy from solar, wind and hydropower and combining it with battery storage, affordable energy contracts and charging networks for electric vehicles — that he says helps keep electricity prices predictable for customers. "More than 75% of the energy that we sell comes from our own assets. These assets don't respond to market prices, so we can keep our price stable," he says. This stability has become increasingly relevant in the face of global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and conflict in the Middle East. For most customers, Maarten says the decision to transition away from fossil fuels comes down to cost. "The combination of renewable energy — which is the cheapest energy — and this obsession for customer satisfaction means that we scale fast, that we are profitable," he says. How the sustainable finance community is 'Building Bridges' to mobilize capital
