Discussing the Hoplite Experiment | Episode 14

In episode 14 we discuss and breakdown the recent Hoplite Experiment conducted by Sur Le Champ in August of 2025 "to test and observe the dynamics of flight and pursuit during the rout of a hoplite formation in ancient Greece." They observed how hoplite formations moved, broke, collided, and pursued fleeing enemies, with emphasis on fear, cohesion, shock, and casualty patterns. We also discuss the limits of reenactment-based military history, including armor, endurance, skirmishers, cavalry, psychology, and the difficulty of recreating real fear of death. We begin by examining the symbolic and metaphysical importance of the sun as a representation of order, intelligibility, and life, and expand into how ancient traditions understood divinity through nature rather than abstraction. We trace recurring solar patterns across cultures and discuss how these connect to natural law, hierarchy, and the structure of reality itself. From there, we move into a broader discussion of religion and philosophy, including the relationship between paganism and Christianity, the role of institutions in shaping belief, and the tension between lived spiritual experience and formal doctrine. We discuss myth as something to be enacted rather than merely believed, and we explore the limits of language in expressing truth, along with the divide between art and rational inquiry. Drawing on thinkers like Plato and Heidegger, we also examine authenticity, nihilism, the modern loss of meaning, and how we can orient ourselves within a fragmented cultural landscape. Reacting to 10 Debates in Ancient History | Episode 11

Original World of Antiquity video: https://youtu.be/DrJ6OGMZ3NQ?si=H8rShD0wmZHXlBZq In Episode 11 of Barbarian Banter, Jonas and Dane react to and discuss "10 Fierce Debates Rocking Ancient History" by the YouTube channel  ⁨@WorldofAntiquity⁩  covering major academic debates in ancient history and archaeology. The episode begins with a breakdown of current disputes surrounding ancient Egyptian genetics and identity, including the interpretation of new genome evidence, the limits of small ancient DNA samples, and the broader problem of projecting modern racial categories onto ancient populations. From there, the conversation moves through a wide range of historical controversies: the repatriation of artifacts and who should own the material remains of the ancient world, competing theories about the Proto-Indo-European homeland and the relationship between genetics and language, and the growing role of AI in translating ancient texts and reconstructing fragmentary inscriptions. Jonas and Dane also discuss the possibility of large-scale urban civilization in the ancient Amazon, debates over Celtic identity and whether “Celtic” represents a meaningful ancient category or a later umbrella label, and tensions in the study of classics over Eurocentrism, language training, and how ancient history should be taught. Later in the episode, they respond to questions from the audience on topics including “surfing the Kali Yuga,” Mouse Utopia and civilizational decline, Lord of the Rings archetypes, esotericism versus nonsense, favorite Assassin’s Creed games, historical legacy, cars, music, and long-term goals. Throughout the episode, the focus remains on evidence, interpretation, myth, identity, and how to think clearly about history without flattening its complexity.Jonas' Links:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/JonasKilkerYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Jonaskilker Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonaskilker/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jonaskilkerX: https://x.com/jonaskilkerJonas’ Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/mythic-vitalism Website: https://jonaskilker.com/Danes Links: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@Thegreatdane269Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_great_dane469/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegreatdane13X: https://x.com/thegreatdane269?s=20 Substack: https://substack.com/@danemillerhassDane’s Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/under-constructionTIMESTAMPS: 00:00:15 – Intro and episode setup 00:03:09 – Reacting to World of Antiquity 00:03:47 – Egyptian genetics and race debate 00:14:57 – Who should own antiquities? 00:26:10 – Proto-Indo-European homeland theories 00:39:02 – AI and ancient text translation 00:51:03 – Ancient Amazon cities debate 00:59:19 – Celtic identity and ethnogenesis 01:12:45 – Early writing in South India 01:16:53 – Is classics too Eurocentric? 01:29:03 – Petra tomb controversy 01:34:56 – Dead Sea Scrolls redating 01:41:26 – Q&A 01:42:11 – Surfing the Kali Yuga 01:50:51 – Mouse Utopia and civilizational collapse 02:00:28 – Lord of the Rings archetypes 02:03:20 – Esotericism versus bullshit 02:08:24 – Cars, music, and personal taste 02:16:56 – Legacy, ambition, and future plans

Paganism, Christianity, and the Shared Language of Nature | Episode 10

In Episode 10 of Barbarian Banter, Jonas and Dane discuss spirituality as it appears in nature rather than only through formal doctrine. The conversation begins with the symbolic and practical importance of the sun, including solar worship in ancient religions, the sun as a life-giving force, and the connection between light, order, and divine structure. They explore parallels between Helios, Apollo, Christ, and other solar figures, along with broader questions about natural law, perennial truth, and the way ancient civilizations understood divinity through the physical world. The episode then moves into a deeper discussion of paganism and C hristianity including the spread of Christianity in Europe, the relationship between doctrine and spiritual practice, the role of Rome in shaping Christianity, and the extent to which Christian mythology continues older Indo-European and pagan themes. Later in the episode, they answer audience questions on the Christ myth controversy and C.S. The conversation examines how personal style develops through environment, subculture, and function, and how many modern aesthetics originate from deeper historical and practical roots. We cover the influence of skate and punk culture, regional identity, and workwear traditions, along with the historical foundations of styles such as Chicano fashion. The discussion also explores how cultural continuity shapes clothing, why imitation often replaces understanding, and how style functions as both a social signal and a reflection of personal standards. The episode expands into content creation, including the challenge of simplifying complex historical topics for modern audiences, the differences between long-form and short-form media, and how creators balance accessibility with accuracy. We also touch on historical storytelling in film, overlooked periods that deserve more attention, and broader philosophical questions about aesthetics, masculinity, and intentional self-presentation. A Tale of Two Goths

In this episode of Barbarian Banter, we return to our barbarian roots with two brutal and unforgettable Gothic war stories. Jonas begins with the rise of Fritigern and the Gothic migration into Roman territory, tracing the collapse of Gothic unity under pressure from the Huns, the Christian-pagan divide between Fritigern and Athanaric, the Roman betrayal at Marcianopolis, and the long buildup to the Battle of Adrianople. He breaks down why Adrianople was one of the most decisive barbarian victories in history and why Fritigern deserves far more recognition as one of the great Gothic leaders. Dane then picks up the story in Ostrogothic Italy with the Gothic resurgence under Totila, leading into the Battle of Faventia and the legendary duel between the Gothic champion Valaris and the Roman commander Artabazes. From single combat and battlefield honor to Totila’s stirring final speech about blood, freedom, and nationhood, this episode explores two powerful Gothic moments that show the barbarian world at its most heroic, violent, and mythic. Along the way, we discuss the Gothic origins in southern Sweden, the Greuthungi-Tervingi divide, the Roman use of barbarian auxiliaries, the Christianization of the Goths, the fatalism of Germanic warrior culture, the Gothic kingdom in Italy, Belisarius, Theoderic the Great, and the deeper relationship between pagan inheritance and Christian Europe.
