Carl Jung
Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Born on July 26, 1875, in Kesswil, Switzerland, Jung's work has had a profound impact on psychology, religion, arts, and literature. He earned his medical degree from the University of Basel in 1900 and subsequently worked at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital in Zurich under Eugen Bleuler, where he became familiar with Sigmund Freud's work. This led to a brief collaboration with Freud, viewing him initially as a mentor and they collectively worked on the development of psychoanalytic theory. However, Jung later diverged from Freud’s ideas, proposing his own distinctive approach. Jung's concept of individuation, the process of integrating the conscious with the unconscious mind, was central to his theory. This led to the development of key concepts like the archetype, the collective unconscious — a shared reservoir of experiences inherited from our ancestors, and psychological complexes. He believed in the deep influence of these structures on individual behavior. He also explored the realm of dreams, symbols, and myths, which he believed were manifestations of the unconscious. He attributed great significance to dreams as a window into the unconscious mind and developed the use of active imagination as a method for individuals to explore their unconscious thoughts. Jung’s interest in Eastern philosophies, alchemy, and astrology, as well as his exploration of the paranormal, contributed to his holistic approach to the psyche. His works, including 'Psychological Types', the 'Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious', and 'Memories, Dreams, Reflections' are seminal texts in the field of depth psychology. He was also a prolific lecturer and traveler, sharing his findings across the world. Despite encountering criticism, his ideas continue to influence fields well beyond psychology, including religion, literature, and the arts. Jung died on June 6, 1961, in Küsnacht, Switzerland. His legacy endures through the Jungian psychological movement and the Institute of Psychology that bears his name.
