Leading Lightly

Kurt Kinnear

Leading Lightly with Kurt Kinnear helps serious leaders, owners, CEOs, and people stepping into bigger responsibility see what is making leadership heavier than it needs to be. This podcast is for leaders who know they are doing too much, carrying too much, or watching too many decisions and problems come back to them. Through practical leadership lessons, real-world experience, and honest reflection, Kurt explores leadership load, unclear ownership, decision bottlenecks, organizational friction, growth pressure, owner dependency, AI and change, and the hidden issues that make organizations harder to lead than they need to be. The goal is not to care less. The goal is to build organizations where caring deeply does not mean carrying everything. Listen if you want to lead with more clarity, reduce unnecessary load, and build something that can grow without taking over your life.

    126. How to Use AI without Losing Critical Thinking

A friend from Brazilian jiu-jitsu asked me what AI platform he should use. That sounds like a software question, but the more I thought about it, the better question became: How do you use AI without letting it weaken your thinking? In this episode, I talk about using AI as a leader without outsourcing your judgment, conviction, critical thinking, or voice. AI can help you organize your thoughts, research faster, write more clearly, and move quicker. But it can also become a shortcut around the mental work that builds leadership. I also talk about how I personally use AI in my creative process, including how I transcribe episodes, use feedback, revise, and record again. After editing this episode, I found myself asking whether AI had influenced the message itself. That became a reminder that if we use AI, we need strong guardrails. AI is here, and like most tools, it can either strengthen us or weaken us depending on how we use it. In this episode: Why AI can make leaders feel smart while reducing the thinking they actually do Why memory, projects, and context matter when using AI How to train AI around your own writing and thinking style Why AI should challenge you instead of simply agreeing with you Why leaders cannot outsource conviction Why privacy and trust boundaries matter How AI can influence your thinking if you are not paying attention How to use AI for load reduction, not life takeover AI should reduce the load, but it should not replace the lift. If this episode is helpful, please subscribe, leave a comment, and share it with someone who is trying to think clearly about how to use AI well.

    125. Leadership Burnout: Are You Carrying Too Much?

Capable leaders often burn out because they care deeply and slowly carry too much. In this episode, Kurt Kinnear uses the leadership backpack analogy to help leaders identify what they are carrying, what should be handed off, and how to shift from carrying everything to creating clarity, ownership, and monitoring rhythms. Episode description / show notes: Why do capable leaders end up overburdened and tired? Often it is not because they are weak or because they do not care. It is because they care deeply, carry too much, and slowly become the operating system for the team, department, or organization. In this episode of Leading Lightly, Kurt Kinnear uses the leadership backpack analogy to explore what leaders carry, why small “slivers” of work become heavy over time, and how leaders can begin shifting from carrying everything themselves to building clarity, ownership, and healthy monitoring rhythms. This episode covers: Why success adds weight to leadership Why care and carrying are not the same thing How leaders accidentally keep invisible pieces of everyone’s job Why delegation is not abandonment The difference between carrying and monitoring Why real ownership needs clarity, boundaries, and rhythm A simple 20-minute exercise to identify what is sitting in your leadership backpack If you are tired as a leader, it may not mean you are failing. It may mean your backpack is overloaded. The organization may have changed, but the weight was never redistributed. The goal is not to carry less because the work matters less. It is to carry the right things and build a system strong enough to carry the rest.
