Jailbreak Lovers (The Toby Dorr Story)

Molly and Kate discuss "the incident," a.k.a. the time Toby Dorr (formerly, Young) helped to break her young lover and convicted felony murderer out of prison in a dog crate. This is the crime on which Lifetime's 2022 movie, "Jailbreak Lovers" is based. Kate has very mixed feelings about the movie: is it funny; is it boring; both? And the ladies have some differing opinions on Toby herself. Whatever your opinion, we can all agree that mid-life crises are real; and sometimes, the idea of filing for divorce is more difficult than living life as a fugitive for helping your incarcerated lover escape a life sentence.

The Murder of Shanda Sharer

This month, Molly and Kate examine the horrific crime against Shanda Sharer, the twelve-year-old whose story inspired Law & Order SVU Season 5, Episode 17, “Mean.” The SVU episode pales in comparison to real life on this one—and thank goodness it does. Shanda’s heartbreaking story is not only an example of the worst that can happen as a result of jealousy and bullying between teens; but also of the damage that may occur in those who have experienced their own personal or familial turmoil.

David Reimer

This week, Molly and Kate discuss David Reimer, whose story partly inspired the Season 6, Episode 12 SVU episode “Identity,” which Molly and friend, Alayna Hillard, covered back in August. David was born “Bruce,” an identical twin to brother Brian. Following a tragic accident during a routine circumcision procedure in David’s infancy, he was raised as female, all the while feeling at odds with his body. Despite David’s ongoing struggles, both children would become the “success” story of Dr. John Money and his theory of infant gender neutrality. The ladies discuss David’s early childhood, his recognition of his biological sex around the age of 14, and how his atypical history affected him and those around him, through to his adulthood.

Strip Search Phone Scam

This episode is no pillow fight in the park! Molly and Kate discuss Law & Order SVU Season 9, episode 17, “Authority,” and the real story behind why Pete from 30 Rock is found strip-searching a fast-food employee in the back room. This fan-favorite episode (at least, one of Kate’s faves) guest-stars Robin Williams as a sly-talking engineer, who is hell-bent on challenging authority. And of course, there are some Mrs. Doubtfire-esque voices involved! The ladies also consider the 2012 very good, but hard-to-watch film, “Compliance,” based on the same crime, in which Molly’s real-life, not creepy friend plays the creep who made scam calls to restaurant managers throughout the United States. They examine the psychological background of obedience through the lens of the 1960’s Milgram Experiments, and the survivor/heroine of the Mt. Washington Phone Scam.

Celeste Beard, Part 2

“I don’t think anyone in the seventies in Arizona was withholding keys from a regular drunk person.” Molls and Kate just couldn’t get enough of Celeste Beard and are back to talk more about the murderous mastermind/perpetual victim. In doing so, they have to tackle some tough questions, such as, “are you a ‘cool mom’ if you get wasted while chaperoning your child’s overnight field trips?” They also work through some points of Beard’s Texas appeal and Kate proves she will never be a professor as she attempts to describe basic legal concepts (which she has not studied since taking the bar exam). Last, but not least, the ladies LOL at some more Amazon reviews for “From the Big House to Your House,” co-authored by our girl. What do you think?
