E 202. How to fix noisy dogs

E 202. How to fix noisy dogs

We get lots of questions each week and one of the top ones is in regards to noisy dogs. My dog is noisy on the line, in the blind, on the dog stand and any other version of this you can imagine. As a result, we hooked up with Randy Bohn (from Rammin' Retrievers) to hear how he fixes this. Randy actually wrote a book called "It's not the dogs fault" and we'd recommend you check it out.
We begin the show getting to know Randy and his experience working with dogs and how he got specialized in building good, quiet dogs. We chat through his training progression and his philosophy on increasing obedience to decrease noise. We finish the conversation discussing what it means to rush a dog and hearing Randy's thought on stickiness.

    E 201. Well, let's ask a vet!

    E 201. Well, let's ask a vet!

Tonight we have the pleasure of chatting with our good friend, Dr. Joe Spoo, or as most people know him, the Gundogdoc. If you haven't heard our previous shows with him, check those out first. Joe is an absolute wealth of knowledge and is also one of the nicest people you'll ever shake hands with.
On this show, we catch up with Joe and hear about his hunting season, then hear about his kit for the field. This is pretty important and you'll hear a little story about Bob's latest venture into being a fake vet surgeon (the dog is ok!), but it's good to have tools on hand if you ever needed it. Since Joe is a vet with years and years of experience, he knows his way around a pair of forceps. He teaches us some "basic" doctoring for the field and shares info about his 16 chapter online course to keep your dog safe while afield.
We end the show with some Q&A that came in with all sorts of good talking points like bow legged dogs, what is limbertail, when to be concerned about lumps or masses, flea and tick (and what he prefers!), joint health, diets and CBD.
***If you're interested in what Dr. Spoo has to say and would like to take his course then it's your lucky day. Please use the code LoneD30 for a slick 30% off.

    E 200. Celebrating the Lone D

Well, here we are. We're 200 episodes into our podcast and still can't believe anyone cares to hear what Bob has to say. Thank you to those who join the show, who follow along, patreon friends, hunting buddies, training pals and more.

For today's show, Bob and Kevin hang out and catch up for the last show of Bob's southern trip. We check in on training and how all the dogs are doing, how he is working through issues and what his hunt tests have been like so far for 2024. We also get a sneak peek that Bob and Blaine were judging at the Boykin National.

*We have a few spots left for our patreon duck hunt. If you're a community member, you're welcome to join us for a seminar and a hunt this December. DM us for info and let's go.

E 199. Trading hunting stories with Andy Wayment

E 199. Trading hunting stories with Andy Wayment

Tonight we have the pleasure of chatting with our friend, Andy Wayment. Andy is a passionate hunter who has been chasing grouse for 25 years and sharing the woods with all sorts of dogs. Fortunately for us, Andy is also a great storyteller and has written a few books about his time spent behind his hunting dogs. We begin the show hearing about Andy and how he got into hunting, what makes a good hunting buddy and where he hunts in his books. Andy is extremely thorough and is able to recall specific details of a hunt like no other. Trust me, it's certainly worth checking out his books, whether or not you're a grouse hunter. Andy also does some more informal writing at his blog, which you can find here.

Want more Lone Duck? Check out our patreon and come hang out with us. Cheers!

E 198. Old stories with Jim Ronquest

E 198. Old stories with Jim Ronquest

It was an absolute pleasure to sit down and talk dogs and hunting with Jim Ronquest. We begin the show learning about Jim, where he grew up and how he got into dogs. Then we chat about the two dogs he currently has and how they're doing with competing and hunting. As you can imagine, they're hunting machines.
The next section is my favorite part of the show and Jim dives into story after story of hunting with past dogs in various places. Jim talks a lot about the determination and passion his dogs have for hunting and it's clear that he shares the same level of commitment. Honestly, it's admirable.
We finish the show discussing good duck dogs and how they can also be high-level competition dogs, how age and experience play into dogs, making better duck dogs and when to take a young dog hunting.

Thank you to Jim for joining the show and trading a few stories with us. Jim does Instagram Lives most Mondays and you should do yourself a favor and follow along. Cheers.

E 197. Training in drive with Pat Nolan

E 197. Training in drive with Pat Nolan

Today's episode is extremely special because we get to chat with our friend, Pat Nolan, about training in drive. It's also special because you can head over to our youtube channel and WATCH this episode to see the videos Pat and Bob discuss during this episode. Aside from catching up with Pat, we chat about collar conditioning and his thoughts on "the goldilocks method." We also spend a lot of time discussing training in drive and how Pat uses this technique to engage dogs and essentially teach them faster and in a more thorough manner. We also discuss conditioned responses with reward markers, teaching directions to younger dogs, using tables to teach, what "force" means to Pat and finally, we discuss miscommunications in training and how to handle these situations.

As always, it is a pleasure to hang out with Pat, hear stories about some of his dogs and the types of work they're doing and soak in some knowledge because boy, there's a lot to take notes on. If you're interested in hearing more from Pat, join a seminar or sign up for his online courses, then check out his website here.
