    The Sweet Potato That Wanted to Be Gasoline

    In 2012, China imported 57% of its oil. In the country's southwest, a humble root crop — the sweet potato — became a candidate for national fuel. A life cycle assessment measured three ways of producing it: the conventional route, one that burns its own waste for power, and a fully circular design that sells even the CO₂ from distillation. Between the first and the last, environmental impact drops by 73%. But the detail almost nobody cites is that the real energy gain comes from cogeneration, not from closing the loop. Less than 1% separates the two on that front. This episode covers why untreated vinasse suffocates rivers, why captured CO₂ sold as a product doesn't actually leave the carbon cycle, and what falls outside the study's system boundary — soil loss, irrigation water, land use change, and biodiversity, which has no unit of measurement in any of it. Then the harder question: nine years on, China's oil import dependence went up, not down, the national E10 mandate quietly stalled, and electrification is doing the substitution that ethanol promised. Meanwhile Panama is fifteen years into the same argument, with a mandatory blend law suspended twice, a court challenge pending, and not one distillery built.     Your ISO 14001 Certificate No Longer Speaks for Your Product | EmpCo x ISO 2026

    Your ISO 14001 certificate never authorised you to call your product green. Until now, nobody enforced it. On 27 September 2026 the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EU) 2024/825 becomes applicable across the European Union. No size threshold, no exemption for stock already printed, no safe harbour for certificates that cannot withstand independent verification. This report examines what each ISO standard does and does not authorise you to say — and why a management system, properly understood, becomes more valuable rather than less. IN THIS EPISODE Why ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 50001 authorise no environmental product claim whatsoever, and what they do contribute.The dividing line almost nobody distinguishes: ISO/IEC 17021 certifies management systems; ISO/IEC 17065 certifies products, processes and services.     The Refracted Transition: Can We Decarbonize Without Recolonizing Biodiversity?

    Solar power can save us from carbon. But if it only measures carbon, it can turn megadiverse territories into the new geography of sacrifice. ⸻ In 2025, the International Energy Agency documented that solar photovoltaic was, for the first time in history, the largest single source of growth in global energy demand. And in the same year, global energy emissions reached a historic record of nearly 38.4 gigatons of CO₂. More renewables. More electric vehicles. More efficiency. And still, more absolute emissions. This paradox is not a contradiction. It is structural. We are installing the future without dismantling the past. And while this happens, the megadiverse territories of the Global South — Atacama, Cobre Panamá, the Salar de Uyuni, the Andean Copper Belt, the Darién Gap, Amazonia — pay in ancient water, biodiversity and sovereignty a cost that no carbon-avoided metric registers. ⸻ The Refracted Transition is the founding episode of Pulpo Verde (Green Octopus), an analytical series on the structural conflicts of the energy transition, viewed through the framework of the Theory of Megabiodiversity.
