Speaking on Business: Volunteers of America Utah

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Serving more than 94 hundred people each year, Volunteers of America - Utah provides community-supported pathways that help individuals facing vulnerability improve their lives and build greater self-reliance. Program Manager, Marcelo Garcia, joins us with more. Marcelo Garcia: For 40 years, Volunteers of America - Utah has worked alongside individuals and families facing some of life's hardest challenges, including homelessness, mental health struggles and addiction. Today, Volunteers of America - Utah serves thousands of people each year through programs focused on healing, stability and long-term support. We know recovery looks different for everyone, which is why we support the whole person. I manage THRIVE, our supported employment program, where we help individuals discover meaningful work and reconnect with purpose, confidence and community. Through job support, vocational guidance, and partnerships with local employers, we help people move forward to greater independence and stability. This September, we'd like to invite employers and community partners to join us for our Hiring and Resource Fair to better help connect individuals with meaningful employment and valuable community resources. To learn more, get involved, or connect with our THRIVE team, visit VOAUT.org. Derek Miller: Through compassionate programs and strong community partnerships, Volunteers of America - Utah is making a real difference across the state. Their work helps people find stability, rebuild confidence and move forward with hope and purpose. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 7/31/26

    Speaking on Business: Thanksgiving Point

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. For over 25 years, Thanksgiving Point has been one of Utah’s most beloved destinations, but its mission goes deeper than a fun day out. CEO, McKay Christensen, shares how they’re making hands-on STEM learning accessible to every child in our state. McKay Christensen: In Utah, 31 percent of kids from high-income households will go on to work in higher-paying STEM jobs, while only 7 percent of low-income kids will do the same. Closing that gap means hundreds of thousands of Utah’s kids can lift themselves from the cycle of poverty. And to help, Thanksgiving Point conducts 200 STEM labs and programs each week across its museums and science centers. Our goal is to bring hands-on STEM learning to all Utah’s kids. That’s why children whose families receive SNAP or WIC benefits can visit our STEM labs, museums and science centers for free. We’re building, by the way, a new Children’s Technology Center in Lehi, where the next generation can explore the tech shaping Utah’s future in industries like aerospace and energy and biotech and fin tech. So I guess it’s true, Thanksgiving Point is where curious kids grow. Derek Miller: Thanksgiving Point welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors each year, but its greatest impact is inspiring Utah’s next generation of innovators, problem solvers and leaders. For more than 40 years, Copic has supported health care professionals with medical liability insurance, education and patient safety resources, helping strengthen care for Utah communities. Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Beverly Razon, joins us with more. Beverly Razon: At Copic, we know that a thriving business economy relies on access to a strong healthcare network for its workforce and customers. Utah ranks among the highest states in the nation for employee-sponsored health insurance. That is a big investment into the health of the state. For this reason, Copic believes partnering with Utah’s business and healthcare communities is imperative to ensuring quality and stability. Working together, businesses can thrive and healthcare professionals can focus on patient care. As part of our long-term commitment to Utahns, every year we honor a Utah physician who generously volunteers their time in their community with the Copic Humanitarian Award. On their behalf, we donate $10,000 to a local nonprofit of the physician’s choice, strengthening local organizations who need it most. We’re here to support the humans of healthcare: for you, for the greater business community and for stable healthcare. Learn more about us at copic.com. Speaking on Business: Cheryl's Bagels

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Founded in 2020, Cheryl’s Bagels brings authentic East Coast bagels to Utah through its brick-and-mortar storefront in Bountiful. Every day, the team serves handcrafted bagels made fresh using traditional methods and time-honored recipes. Founder, Cheryl Mignone, joins us with more. Cheryl Mignone: I started making bagels because I couldn’t find the East Coast-style bagels I grew up with. What began as a personal mission turned into a business built on tradition, quality and connection. At Cheryl’s every bagel is rolled, kettle-boiled and baked fresh each morning — never day-old. We make our sandwiches fresh to order, serve house-made cream cheeses, cater special events and focus on delivering a great experience with every visit. Our purpose goes beyond the food. We strive to be a neighborhood gathering place where customers feel welcomed, recognized and appreciated. Whether it’s a busy commuter grabbing breakfast, a family enjoying a weekend tradition or friends meeting over coffee, we believe small businesses help create stronger communities. Our goal is simple: share authentic East Coast bagels and create places where people connect, one bagel at a time. To learn more visit CherylsBagels.com. Derek Miller: Small businesses help make Utah’s communities stronger by creating local jobs, supporting families and bringing people together. Through a focus on quality, service and community, Cheryl’s Bagels continues to build meaningful connections and contribute to the places its customers call home. Speaking on Business: Utah Transit Authority

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. For more than 50 years, the Utah Transit Authority has connected Utahns to work, school and everyday destinations. It continues to help strengthen communities across the Wasatch Front through safe, reliable public transportation. Events and Sponsorship Strategist, Marina Riddle, joins us with more. Marina Riddle: At the Utah Transit Authority, we are focused on connecting people to opportunity. Every day, UTA provides safe, reliable and affordable transportation that supports our economy, strengthens communities and improves quality of life across the Wasatch Front. Our mission is simple: We Move You. We move employees to jobs, students to school, customers to businesses and families to parks, concerts and sporting events — all while reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. UTA also helps move Utah’s economy forward. A recent study found that for every dollar invested in UTA, our community receives $5.11 back in economic return. And that positive impact benefits all Utahn’s, whether you ride transit or not. As we look ahead, we remain focused on improving our system to better serve our customers and communities. Learn more and plan your trip at rideUTA.com. Derek Miller: UTA is helping keep Utah’s economy moving forward every day. Speaking on Business: Roots Coffee

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Opened in 2021, Roots Coffee & Co. has lived by its motto, “People First, Coffee Second,” creating an experience centered on meaningful connections, exceptional customer service and great coffee. Owner, Kenzie Packard, joins us with more. Kenzie Packard: Building a business has taught us that success has very little to do with what you’re selling and everything to do with how you make people feel. Since opening five years ago, we’ve grown to three locations and recently expanded into wholesale, but that growth isn’t what we’re most proud of. What we’re most proud of is the community that we’ve built. We’ve always believed that if you’re fortunate enough to grow, you should put the ladder back down and help someone else climb it. That’s why we love partnering with local businesses, cheering on other entrepreneurs and creating genuine relationships. We truly believe there’s enough room for all of us to succeed. Coffee has never been the end goal. It’s simply what brings people through our doors. But what really matters is that people leave feeling seen, remembered, encouraged or like they belong. If we’ve done that, then we’ve done exactly what we set out to do. Derek Miller: Roots Coffee & Co. has built a welcoming space where every cup of coffee and conversation helps bring the community together. To learn more visit RootsCoffeeUtah.com.
