First Call | Auburn Just Won a Game It Would Have LOST the Last 5 Years

Auburn is 1-0. And maybe the biggest takeaway from the win over Baylor isn't how Auburn played. It's HOW Auburn won. Because this feels like a game Auburn would have found a way to lose over the last several years. We've seen it too many times. Auburn gets into a close game. Something goes wrong late. A turnover happens. A drive stalls. The defense can't make the final stop. And somehow Auburn walks away wondering how it let another game slip away. That didn't happen against Baylor. With the game tied 10-10, Auburn's offense had to make a play. It did. Byrum Brown and the Tigers went down the field and took the lead. Then Baylor answered. Suddenly the entire game came down to one two-point conversion. Auburn's defense needed ONE play. It made it. That's why this win might matter significantly more than simply starting the Alex Golesh era 1-0. Was Auburn perfect? Absolutely not. There were missed opportunities. The offense wasn't nearly as explosive as many of us expected. And maybe we underestimated Baylor and just how different that defense would look in 2026. But Auburn stayed patient. It adjusted. And when the Tigers absolutely HAD to execute, they found a way. Darryl Dapprich joins First Call to explain why he believes this was exactly the kind of football game Auburn would have lost in previous seasons and why surviving it could become important later when the Tigers get into close SEC games. We also start looking ahead to Southern Miss. After watching Baylor load the box and challenge Auburn's offense, should Southern Miss try to follow the same blueprint? And what adjustments do Alex Golesh and Byrum Brown need to make in Week 2? Plus, Dap takes us behind the scenes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, from walking through Tiger Walk with the media to covering the final moments from field level and what it's actually like working inside a strict college football press box. Auburn didn't play its best football Saturday. But maybe it showed us something even more important. This team found a way to WIN. #Auburn #AuburnFootball #WarEagle #AlexGolesh #ByrumBrown #SEC
