What are you doing in Denmark is the podcast that helps you make Denmark makes sense. The name is inspired by "hvad laver du i Danmark," one of the most-heard questions for foreigners living amongst the Danes. This show delivers a blend of education, entertainment, and virtual group therapy from your hosts Derek Hartman and Annie Samples.
Derek and Annie have been living in Denmark for years, although it was never the plan for either of them. They both relocated with their families and have been through all the ups and downs of living abroad and adjusting to the Danish lifestyle. They spare no details about fitting in, and not fitting in as foreigners in Denmark while keeping things light, positive, and often hilarious!
Besides their personal trials and triumphs, Derek and Annie bring in guests and experts to share their knowledge and enrich the dialogue. Both Danes and fellow internationals from all walks of life and corners of the globe frequent the podcast. Mental health struggles for foreigners in Denmark
This week, Nanna Hauch aka the Expat Hero, joins Derek and Annie to address an important topic - mental health for foreigners living in Denmark. She discusses the unique mental health challenges that the international community in Denmark is faced with. Nanna brings her expertise as a licensed psychotherapist to the What Are You Doing in Denmark community and offers advice on a wide range of issues faced by international families including Derek and Annie.
Nanna describes how her own experiences living abroad and repatriating influenced her desire to help other expats face mental health struggles. This episode dives deep into the issues faced by couples who move abroad from one partner’s career. Derek explains why he often uses the word “untethered” to describe his experience of living abroad. Moving to Denmark versus moving to Finland (with Chico Muya)

Moving to Denmark as a child and the political challenges for foreigners in Denmark
Lyndsay Jensen, the founder and editor of The International, is back in the studio with Annie and Derek to talk about the political changes in how foreigners in Denmark are treated and perceived. She recently spoke at Folkemødet on the needs of internationals living in Denmark and their important place in the Danish economy and society at large.
In the discussion, Lyndsay references her eldest son, Connor, who moved to Denmark as a child and has been shaped by multiple cultures throughout his life. It seemed only right to have Connor join the conversation and share his experiences with teenage drinking, learning Danish and transitioning into the education system, and the cultural differences he experienced when inviting friends to his home as a kid.
The conversation was eye-opening to Annie who moved her oldest sons to Denmark and is going through many of these changes in real time.

Lyndsay shares her story of moving to Denmark after growing up as a Brit living in South Africa. You could say she’s been an expat her whole life. After a decade of life in South Africa with her Danish husband, she expected a soft landing in Denmark. Instead she found herself in a sink or swim existence.

Must-listen pod for internationals in Denmark
Really fun and well-conducted podcast. It sports a variety of guests who sometimes are pretty candid about what living in Denmark is for internationals. If I had one criticism, it would be that its guests tend to be on the ‘successful’ end of the spectrum, which might not be truly representative of the international community. But on the other hand, maybe that’s exactly the purpose of the show, to share some inspiration by showing that some of us have made it.
So relatable
I’m Danish, my husband is American, and we moved to Denmark last summer. Can relate so much to all the conversations, thanks for making me(us) feel less alone.
