Getting Development Done: 2025 in Review and Look Ahead

This year countries grappled with a cascade of shocks and economic turbulence, from ongoing conflicts and economic uncertainty to catastrophic weather that tested communities. Yet in the face of these challenges, nations proved far more resilient and adaptive than predicted. In this episode of The Development Podcast, we look back at what shaped 2025 and look ahead to 2026 and beyond. As the global landscape rapidly shifts, we explore how Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) are adapting and how different parts of the World Bank Group, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), are working as one to maximize our development impact. Join us for insights on these issues and more from Anna Bjerde, the World Bank's Managing Director of Operations and Raj Kumar, the founding President and Editor-in-Chief of Devex. Independence Special: Proud, Independent and Slightly Hardears

In this Independence Day special of Jus’ Ah Conversation, we’re putting the seriousness aside and celebrating Barbados the best way Bajans know how — with jokes, big opinions, cultural nostalgia, and a little friendly madness. Hosts Mikul Elcock, Aisha Reid, Shayla Murrell and Fabian Belgrave are joined by the Jus’ Ah Conversation family for a light-hearted but meaningful look at Bajan identity. Using our own Bajan Wildcards game, the crew answers fun, outrageous, and patriotic questions about everything that makes Barbados… Barbados. From sno-cone debates, to favourite Bajan sayings, to the foods we love (and hate), to the quirks only a true Bajan would understand — this episode is full of laughter, storytelling, and national pride. 🇧🇧 It’s culture. It’s comedy. It’s conversation. It’s Barbados. Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and wherever you get your podcasts. Shabana Mahmood, British Home Secretary: Do not make that boat crossing

Nick Robinson speaks to Shabana Mahmood, British Home Secretary, about her far-reaching proposals to shake up the UK immigration system, designed to make asylum seekers think twice before attempting to enter the country illegally. She also shares her own experience of racism as the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and her belief that ensuring secure borders is the best way to combat this. Under her plans, refugee status will be made temporary, with frequent reviews, meaning people could be returned to their home country if it is deemed safe. Refugees will also need to live in the UK for 20 years before they can apply to stay permanently, a signifcant increase on the current five years. The removal of failed asylum seekers will be speeded up, and Shabana Mahmood is revoking the legal duty to provide them with support such as housing and money. Maria Ressa, freedom of speech campaigner: The information apocalypse is threatening democracy

Marianna Spring, the BBC’s social media investigations correspondent, speaks to Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, co-founder of the independent Filipino news outlet Rappler. With over 40 years in journalism, Maria describes today’s information landscape as a war zone, where online attacks, including doxxing, misogynistic hashtags, and manipulated images don’t just stay online. They spill into real-world intimidation and violence. This conversation explores the rise of online misogyny, the weaponisation of social media by authoritarian regimes, and the global impact on press freedom. Maria draws on her experience in the Philippines to offer insights for resisting digital repression and calls out tech giants for failing to protect democracy. She also shares her vision for accountability and action and what needs to happen to safeguard journalism and democracy in the digital age. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The best interviews from the BBC. You can listen on the BBC World Service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 0800 GMT. Or you can listen to The Interview as a podcast, out three times a week on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts.
