Japan’s escalating row with China over Taiwan

In a rapidly escalating diplomatic dispute, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments suggesting Japan might intervene militarily if China attacks Taiwan have triggered a strong backlash from Beijing.

China’s Consul General in Osaka made a provocative statement on social media, which was later removed, and Beijing has since imposed retaliatory measures, including halting Japanese film releases and discouraging travel to Japan. These actions have led to a sharp decline in tourism and a significant drop in Japan’s tourism-linked stocks.

In this episode of Global Heartbeat podcast, host Han Yonghong invites Professor Ho Szu-Shen from the Department of Japanese Language and Culture at Fu Jen Catholic University to share his insights on this latest flare-up in Sino-Japanese relations and the broader implications for Taiwan and regional stability.
